The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG models are performance-tuned, 2-passenger grand touring sports cars based on the redesigned 2013 Mercedes SL550.
Every 2013 SL AMG is equipped with a power panoramic glass retractable hardtop that folds and stows in 16 seconds, and a Magic Vision Control windshield washer system that cleans the glass without impairing forward vision, Mercedes claims. Standard equipment also includes bi-xenon headlights with Active Curve Illumination, an Adaptive High-beam Assist system, LED running lights, LED taillights, and rain-sensing wipers.
The SL63 AMG is equipped with a set of 19-inch AMG aluminum wheels, while the SL65 AMG model is fitted with front wheels measuring 19 inches in diameter and rear wheels measuring 20 inches.
Inside, the new SL AMG is equipped with an AMG sport steering wheel, AMG instrumentation, IWC "Ingenieur" dash-top clock, AMG illuminated doorsill trim, and carbon fiber dash trim. The SL63 AMG's seats are wrapped in sun-reflective AMG leather upholstery, while the SL65 AMG includes AMG Exclusive leather that extends to the door panels, dashboard, and center console. The windshield pillars are wrapped in Dinamica microfiber on this model.
Otherwise, the SL AMG is outfitted like the SL550 on which it is based. It comes with a navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity with music streaming capability, and a premium audio system with FrontBass speakers, HD Radio, satellite radio, hard-drive music server, and a CD/DVD changer. The driver and passenger sit on 12-way power-adjustable heated seats with memory settings, enjoying a dual-zone automatic climate control system and a power wind-blocker.Optional Features
The SL63 AMG can be optioned with a Premium 1 package that adds active multi-contour front seats with massage and ventilation, AirScarf neck-heating system, and Keyless Go passive entry with push-button ignition. This package also contains a reversing camera, front and rear park-assist sensors with Active Parking Assist, and a hands-free access trunk with a power closing mechanism. A Driver Assistance package is also optional, adding an active blind-spot assist system, active lane-keeping assist system, and an active cruise control system with PreSafe Brake technology.
Additionally, the SL63 AMG can be upgraded with an AMG Performance package that increases engine power and the roadster's top speed, and adds red-painted brake calipers, limited-slip rear differential, AMG performance steering wheel with Dinamica trim, carbon fiber engine cover, and a carbon fiber rear lip spoiler. A Bang & Olufsen BeoSound premium audio system, premium sun-reflective leather, and a Magic Sky Control system, which electrically alters the panoramic glass roof's transparency level, are also optional for the SL63 AMG.
These features are standard on the SL65 AMG. Both SL AMG models can be optioned with an AMG Exterior Carbon Fiber package (carbon fiber front bumper trim, carbon fiber mirror housings, carbon fiber rear lip spoiler); Burl Walnut or Black Ash wood cabin trim; wood/leather steering wheel; AMG performance suspension; and an AMG carbon ceramic braking system. The SL65 AMG is also available with an AMG performance steering wheel with Dinamica trim.Under the Hood
The 2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG has a hand-built, twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V-8 engine that delivers 530 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 590 lb.-ft. of torque between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm. When equipped with the optional AMG Performance package, this engine generates 557 horsepower and 664 lb.-ft. of torque. The standard 7-speed AMG SpeedShift MCT transmission offers aluminum paddle shifters for manual control over gear changes. Mercedes says the SL63 AMG accelerates to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.
The 2013 Mercedes SL65 AMG has a handcrafted, twin-turbocharged, 6.0-liter V-12 engine generating 621 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and 738 lb.-ft. of torque between 2,300 and 4,300 rpm. It is paired with a new 7-speed AMG SpeedShift Plus automatic transmission and an AMG limited-slip rear differential, and Mercedes says this model accelerates to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds.
A standard AMG Drive Unit with E-Select offers four driving modes: Controlled Efficiency, Sport, Sport+, and Manual. A Race Start launch control function is also included, and automatic stop/start technology is standard, active only when the transmission is placed in Controlled Efficiency mode. New for 2013, the electromechanical steering includes Direct Steer technology, which varies the steering ratio depending on vehicle speed and how far the steering wheel is turned.
An AMG-calibrated Active Body Control suspension is standard on the SL AMG, and it includes a Sport mode. Active Body Control eliminates body roll, pitch, dive, and squat for what Mercedes calls an ideal balance of comfort and response. Additional AMG-specific upgrades include a sport exhaust system and a high-performance compound braking system.Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Mercedes SL AMG models are:
- SL63 AMG: 16/25/19 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- SL65 AMG: To be determined
An AMG high-performance compound braking system is standard on the SL AMG, and includes larger brake discs plus 6-piston front calipers, brake assist, torque vectoring brake, predictive brake priming, brake drying, hill-start assist, and hill-hold assist. Eight air bags are also standard, and the SL AMG is equipped with Attention Assist drowsy driver detection technology, driver-selectable 3-stage traction and stability control system, PreSafe technology that readies the cabin for a collision, and pop-up roll bars designed to protect occupants in a rollover accident.
A Driver Assistance package (standard for SL65 AMG) includes active blind-spot assist, active lane-keeping assist, and an active cruise control system with PreSafe Brake technology. The SL63 AMG is also available with a reversing camera system and front and rear park-assist sensors.
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class.
