The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a compact 2-seat coupe and convertible. A direct descendant of the Mercedes-Benz 300SL "Gullwing" of the 1950s, the SL-Class is currently in its fifth generation, last redesigned for the 2003 model year. The SL-Class was refreshed for 2009 and there was no 2010 model. The SL-Class returns for 2011 with a two-model lineup and minor option changes.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is sold in two different models: SL550 and SL63 AMG. All versions share the same electric-powered folding steel "Vario Roof," which opens and closes at the touch of a button. Additional standard features include leather upholstery, air conditioning with dual-zone climate control, active suspension, active bi-Xenon headlamps, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, 12-way heated front seats with memory function, 18-inch wheels, and more. An option package adds the automaker's Airscarf system, which warms the occupants' head and neck areas through air outlets in the head restraints, keyless ignition, power-operated trunk, massaging seats, and other enhancements. Parking sensors and a glass-panel roof are also optional. In addition to a larger engine, the enthusiast-oriented SL63 AMG features high-performance suspension, upgraded brakes, sport seats, sport steering wheel, AMG-specific trim, and 19-inch light-alloy wheels. A very limited-production Night Edition model features matte-black paint, two-tone wheels, and contrasting elements in silver, among its changes.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is offered with a choice of two different engines. The standard power plant under the hood of the SL550 is a 5.5-liter 8-cylinder engine rated at 382 horsepower. The performance-oriented SL63 AMG is fitted with a 6.2-liter 8-cylinder engine rated at 518 horsepower. Both engines are mated to a standard 7-speed automatic transmission, but the AMG model features a different, high-performance gearbox. Rear-wheel drive is standard on all SL-Class models. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class between 12 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, depending on powertrain.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz SL550 starts at a base price of around $104,000 and tops out with the SL63 AMG, which starts around $199,000.
