Interior Features
Every 2013 S350 BlueTec, S400 Hybrid, and S550 is equipped with leather upholstery, 12-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated active front seats with massage, wood interior trim, ambient cabin lighting, wood/leather steering wheel, and dual-zone automatic climate control. A power sunroof, Keyless Go entry and push-button ignition, and a universal garage door opener are also included on the S-Class, along with a power trunk closer and a power rear window shade. The standard COMAND system includes Bluetooth connectivity, navigation system, 7.2-gigabyte music register hard drive, and a 600-watt premium surround-sound audio system with HD Radio and satellite radio.

Optional Features
Options for the S350 BlueTec, S400 Hybrid, and S550 include a Driver Assistance package (active cruise control, blind-spot assist, lane-keeping assist); Sport package (19- or 20-inch AMG wheels, exterior body kit); and a Rear Seat package (8-way power-adjustable outboard rear seats with heating and ventilation, 4-zone automatic climate control system).

Additional options for these versions of the S-Class include a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound premium audio system, split-view front-seat entertainment system, rear-seat entertainment system, power rear side-window sunshades, panoramic sunroof, upgraded leather, heated steering wheel, and Night View Assist Plus with Pedestrian Detection.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz S600 includes nearly all of these items as standard equipment, and adds premium semi-aniline leather upholstery. The only options are the split-view front-seat entertainment system and 20-inch aluminum wheels.

Under the Hood
Each version of the 2013 Mercedes S-Class is equipped with its own unique engine. A 240-horsepower, 3.0-liter, turbo-diesel V-6 engine is installed in the S350 BlueTec model, which generates 455 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,600 rpm and 2,400 rpm. A 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters directs the power to all four wheels through a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

The 2013 Mercedes S400 Hybrid pairs a 3.5-liter V-6 engine to an electric assist motor and a Lithium-ion battery for a combined output of 295 horsepower and 284 lb.-ft. of torque. The S400 Hybrid is equipped with automatic stop/start technology, 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and rear-wheel drive.

The 2013 Mercedes S550 has a twin-turbocharged, 4.6-liter V-8 engine generating 429 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,800 rpm and 3,500 rpm. A 7-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard. An Active Body Control suspension and 4Matic all-wheel drive are optional.

The 2013 Mercedes S600 is endowed with a twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V-12 engine generating 510 horsepower and 612 lb.-ft. of torque. The power is delivered to the rear wheels through a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz S-Class are:

  • S400 Hybrid: 19/25/21 mpg
  • S550: 15/25/19 mpg
  • S550 4Matic: 15/24/18 mpg

Safety
Mercedes-Benz installs 8 air bags in every S-Class, along with a traction and stability control system, and 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, Predictive Brake Priming, brake drying, and torque vectoring braking. Additional standard safety features include hill-start assist, hill-hold assist, Mbrace telematics service, rain-sensing wipers, reversing camera, and park-assist sensors. Standard Attention Assist technology is designed to detect a drowsy driver, and a PreSafe system automatically readies the vehicle for a crash by closing the windows and moving the seats to a position for optimal safety.

The 2013 S-Class is offered with an active blind-spot assist system and an active lane-keeping assist system, each of which are designed to take corrective action if the driver does not. Night View Assist Plus with Pedestrian Detection puts an infrared image of the road ahead on the monitor embedded into the gauge cluster, augmenting the headlights and highlighting the presence of pedestrians. Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control keeps a set distance between the S-Class and traffic ahead, automatically accelerating and braking the vehicle when traveling at speeds up to 125 miles per hour, according to Mercedes. Models equipped with the Active Body Control suspension include crosswind stabilization, which reconfigures wheel load distribution and stabilizes the car.

As this overview is written, neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has performed crash tests on the 2013 Mercedes S-Class.
