The 2010 model year brings a minor exterior refresh to the flagship Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan-with a slew of new optional innovative electronics within its luxurious cabin-and the introduction of a hybrid model aptly named the S400 Hybrid.

Mercedes-Benz's top-of-the-line model, the S-Class has been in production for close to 60 years. It's available with a wide choice of engines and a long list of standard equipment, plus many opportunities for customization. For 2010, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has introduced a hybrid engine that works with a lithium-ion battery.
Trim levels for the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, each of which refer to their respective powertrains, are the S400 Hybrid, S550, S550 4Matic, S600, S63 AMG, and S65 AMG. The S400 Hybrid is the base trim, and features 18-inch wheels, air suspension and adaptive damping, a full range of automatic and power features, sunroof, leather upholstery, and a premium Harman Kardon sound system. Several option packages are available. Many of those become standard equipment on higher trim levels. Available features include a panoramic sunroof, infra-red night-vision assist, many safety upgrades, a rear-seat entertainment system, larger wheels, higher-powered brakes, and much more.
The S400 Hybrid power plant consists of a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that gets a boost from a lithium-ion battery. Together, they produce 295 horsepower and 284 lb.-ft. of torque, and deliver 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The S550 and S550 4Matic feature a 382-horsepower, 5.5-liter V-8 engine. The S600 employs a 510-horsepower, 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V-12 engine. The S63 AMG features a 518-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 engine, and the S65 AMG steps up to a 604-horsepower, 6.0-liter, twin-turbo V-12 engine that produces 738 lb.-ft. of torque. The S550 4Matic uses all-wheel drive; the rest of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models are rear-wheel drive. Seven-speed automatic transmissions are standard with V-8 engines, while V-12 models feature a 5-speed automatic transmission.
Standard safety features on the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class include anti-lock brakes, front and rear side air bags, side curtain air bags, electronic traction and stability control, a reactive pre-impact system, and a driver fatigue warning system. Many other safety features are optional, including lane-departure warning and blind-spot warning.
MSRPs for the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class ranged from $87,950 to $201,150.
