Exterior Features
The 2012 Mercedes-Benz R-Class is a full-size luxury 4-door crossover offered in two trim levels. Nineteen-inch wheels are standard.
Interior Features
The 2012 Mercedes-Benz R-Class seats 6 or 7 passengers, depending on seat configuration, and offers up to 83.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the second- and third-row seats folded down. With all seat rows in use, cargo volume is 15.2 cubic feet. Both trim levels come standard with a long list of features, including Bluetooth connectivity, power accessories, dual-zone automatic climate control, premium vinyl upholstery, and an audio system with CD, auxiliary connection, and satellite and HD radio.
Optional Features
Mercedes-Benz groups many of the R-Class options into packages. The Premium 1 package includes a rearview camera, auto-dimming mirrors, power liftgate, and iPod interface. The Premium 2 package adds keyless entry and ignition, and an upgraded Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system. Available only on the R350 4Matic model is the Sport Appearance package, which features 20-inch wheels and blue-tinted glass. Stand-alone options include a blind-spot warning system, panoramic sunroof, heated seats, and a rear-seat entertainment system.
Under the Hood
Mercedes-Benz R350 4Matic models are equipped with a new 3.5-liter V-6 engine rated at 302 horsepower, while R350 Bluetec 4Matic models are powered by a 3.0-liter, V-6 turbo-diesel engine rated at 210 horsepower. Both models come standard with a 7-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive.
Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz R-Class are:
- R350: 16/21/18 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- R350 Bluetec: 18/23/20 mpg
Safety
Standard safety features on the Mercedes-Benz R-Class include active front head restraints, full-length side curtain air bags, and the PreSafe collision detection system.
To date, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not tested the 2012 Mercedes-Benz R-Class. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the R-Class received "Good" ratings--the Institute's highest--for both frontal-offset and side-impact crash protection.
