What's New for 2012:
- All-new generation of M-Class features new design
- Increased interior styling options
- Improved fuel efficiency for both conventional and turbo-diesel engines
- Discontinued hybrid model
The Mercedes-Benz M-Class is a luxury SUV. The completely redesigned 2012 model borrows styling cues from other Mercedes-Benz models. When the 2012 M-Class was first introduced, it was available in two trim levels, with two more trims (both featuring V-8 engines) to follow later in the year. The ML350 V-6 and the ML350 Bluetec both feature 19-inch wheels, power liftgate, sunroof, fog lights, and an unmistakably different profile from the 2011 M-Class model.
Standard interior features on the Mercedes-Benz M-Class include vinyl upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, reclining rear seats, power accessories, Bluetooth connectivity, emergency telematics, and an 8-speaker sound system. The ML550 and ML63 AMG trims, expected later in 2012, may include more features and options. Maximum cargo space with rear seats folded down is 71 cubic feet.
Stand-alone options on the Mercedes-Benz M-Class include a panoramic sunroof, 3-zone climate control, full leather upholstery that may be upgraded to two-tone, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a rear-seat entertainment system. The Premium 1 package adds many more power accessories, upgraded mirrors, navigation system with voice controls, and satellite radio. The Premium 2 package adds keyless ignition and entry, Harman Kardon surround-sound system, upgraded lighting, and heated/cooled cup-holders. The Dynamic Handling package focuses on suspension; the Lane Tracking package adds safety features; the Driver Assistance package includes active cruise control; and the Lighting package upgrades interior and exterior lights.
Under the Hood
The Mercedes-Benz ML350 is fitted with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine rated at 302 horsepower and mated with all-wheel drive and a 7-speed automatic transmission. The ML350 Bluetec features a 3.0-liter, turbo-diesel V-6 engine rated at 240 horsepower that delivers 455 lb.-ft. of torque.
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class are:
- ML350: 17/22/19 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- ML350 Bluetec: 20/27/22 mpg
Standard safety features on the 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class include anti-lock disc brakes, traction control, hill-start assist and descent control, PreSafe collision system, front- and rear-seat side air bags, driver knee air bag, and side curtain air bags. Optional is the Lane Tracking package, which includes lane-departure and blind-spot warning systems.
To date, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not tested the 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class. In safety tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Mercedes-Benz M-Class received "Good" ratings--the Institute's highest--in all crash protection tests.
