Overview

What's New for 2015:

  • No changes are made to the GLK-Class for the 2015 model year

Introduction
Until this year, the GLK-Class was the least expensive SUV in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. Now, with the arrival of the new GLA-Class, the GLK bridges the distance between it and the midsized M-Class model. The Mercedes GLK competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Cadillac SRX, Infiniti QX50, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Lexus NX, Lincoln MKC, and Volvo XC60.

Models and Features
Two versions of the 2015 GLK-Class are for sale. The GLK250 BlueTec is equipped with a turbo-diesel engine, while the GLK350 has a gasoline-fired V-6 engine. A 4Matic all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is standard for the GLK250 BlueTec and optional for the GLK350.

Standard equipment for both versions of the GLK-Class includes 19-in. aluminum wheels. Inside, the seats are upholstered in MB-Tex leatherette and face a dashboard decorated in burl walnut interior trim. A 14-way power driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, 4.5-in. infotainment system display screen, and an Attention Assist drowsy-driver detection system are also standard, along with HD Radio and Bluetooth connectivity with audio-streaming capability.

Under the Hood
A turbocharged, 2.1-liter, 4-cylinder diesel engine is standard in the GLK250 BlueTec, paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission and a 4Matic AWD system. This engine makes 200 horsepower at 3,800 rpm and 369 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,600 rpm and 1,800 rpm, and is compatible with regular diesel or B5 bio-diesel. Mercedes says the GLK250 BlueTec accelerates to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds.

The GLK350 is equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, 7-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive (RWD). All-wheel drive is optional for the GLK350. The V-6 generates 302 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 273 lb.-ft. of torque between 3,500 rpm and 5,250 rpm. Acceleration to 60 mph takes 6.5 seconds, according to Mercedes.

Fuel Economy
The EPA says that the GLK250 BlueTec 4Matic should return 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Compare that with the GLK350, which ranges from a low of 18 mpg in the city with 4Matic to 26 mpg on the highway with RWD.

Safety and Technology
To outfit a Mercedes GLK with the latest in safety and infotainment technology, it is necessary to add optional equipment. An exception is the free trial of various mBrace services, which include programmable vehicle speed and curfew alerts, a TravelZones geographic boundary alert, SOS emergency calling, automatic collision notification, and more. A free trial to Mercedes-Benz Apps technology is also standard, granting access to Wi-Fi connectivity, TuneIn global radio, Google Local Search, Facebook, Yelp, and more.

Highlights from the upgrade list include a reversing camera, park-assist sensors, surround-view camera system, blind-spot monitoring system, and a lane-departure warning system. Active versions of blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning are also available, along with an adaptive cruise control system that includes automatic pre-collision braking. Adaptive high-beam headlights and bi-xenon headlights with curve-illumination technology are also available.

Convenience technologies include an available power liftgate and Keyless Go passive entry with push-button engine starting. A navigation system with a larger 7-in. display screen, premium audio system, 10-gigabyte music hard drive, and voice-control technology for the infotainment system are also available for the 2015 GLK-Class. Additionally, buyers can activate a subscription to satellite radio, traffic, and weather services.
