Offered as the lineup's base model, the 2014 GL350 Bluetec is equipped with a bounty of standard amenities, such as 19-in. alloy wheels, wood and leather interior trim, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, power tilt/slide moonroof, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and an 8-speaker sound system. With the exception of a different engine, the GL450 includes the same features, but the GL550 ups the ante by adding 21-in. alloy wheels, adaptive HID headlights, heated and cooled power front seats with 14-way adjustment, front and rear park-assist sensors, navigation, satellite radio, and a 610-watt surround-sound system.
The top-of-the-line 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG also rides on 21-in. alloy wheels, though they're exclusive to this version of the GL-Class. Other upgrades consist of a power moonroof shade and revised bumpers.Options and Packages
To say that the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is available with a few options would be a significant understatement. If a creature comfort or safety system can be added to an SUV, chances are it's within one of the GL's many feature-laden packages. Among the more notable offerings are tri-zone climate control, rear-seat entertainment system, illuminated running boards, off-road suspension settings and locking differentials, massaging front and heated rear seats, genuine wood trim, and more.Under the Hood
For the 2014 GL350 Bluetec, Mercedes uses a turbocharged, 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine that produces 240 horsepower and 455 lb.-ft. of torque. The company's 4matic 4WD is standard on all GL-Class models, as is a 7-speed automatic transmission featuring a manual-shift mode.
In lieu of an efficient diesel power plant, the 2014 GL450 draws its motivation from a twin-turbocharged, 4.7-liter V-8 that generates 362 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft. of torque. That same engine is at the heart of the GL550, albeit with tuning that creates 429 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque.
Befitting its high-performance character, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG serves as host to a hand-built, twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V-8 engine with output measuring 550 horsepower and 560 lb.-ft. of torque. That abundant muscle is complemented by an air suspension system.Fuel Economy
Diesel engines are well known for their outstanding fuel economy, and the example found under the hood of the Mercedes-Benz GL350 Bluetec is no exception. With EPA estimates of 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, this motor is about 36% more efficient than the gasoline-powered GL450. At the other end of the spectrum is the 2014 GL63 AMG, averaging just 13 mpg around town and 17 mpg on the freeway, according to EPA fuel-economy figures.Safety Ratings and Technology
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.
In addition to standard 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and up to 8 air bags, the GL-Class offers safety systems including intelligent cruise control, a blind-spot monitoring system, lane-departure warning, 360-degree exterior camera, and a night-vision display.
