Overview

The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a full-size 7-passenger sport utility vehicle that was first introduced for the 2007 model year. Unlike the G-Class, which employs a truck-based body-on-frame platform, the GL-Class shares a modified M-Class unibody platform for a more carlike ride. The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is designed to rival the Audi Q7, Infiniti QX56 and Lexus LX 570. There were only minor changes to the GL-Class for 2011, including a new blind-spot monitoring system and a slightly restyled front bumper with integrated running lamps.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is offered in three models: GL350 Bluetec, GL450 4Matic, and GL550 4Matic. Standard equipment on the GL350 and GL450 includes premium vinyl upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air conditioning, 8-way power front seats with heat, power-operated third-row split-folding seats, Bluetooth phone connectivity, 8-speaker audio system, and more. The GL450 is fitted with 19-inch wheels while the GL350 has 20-inch alloys. Various premium packages add a rear power-operated tailgate, power-folding mirrors, upgraded front seats with memory feature, navigation system, iPod interface, keyless entry, keyless ignition, Harmon Kardon audio system, and other premium equipment. Other packages add leather upholstery, bi-Xenon headlamps, parking sensors, running boards, and more. The GL550 is fitted with all of this equipment as standard, plus a unique front fascia and 21-inch wheels.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is offered with one of three engines: two of the engines burn gasoline while the third model is a diesel-powered variant. The standard engine under the hood of the gasoline-powered GL450 is a 4.7-liter 8-cylinder rated at 335 horsepower. The gasoline-powered GL550 features a 5.5-liter 8-cylinder engine rated at 382 horsepower. The diesel GL350 Bluetec is fitted with a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine rated at 210 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. All 2011 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class models feature a 7-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic, a permanent all-wheel-drive system designed to improve traction during inclement weather and light off-road conditions, according to Mercedes. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class between 12 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, depending on the engine.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz GL350 Bluetec starts at a base price of around $61,500, and tops out with the GL550 4Matic, which starts at around $85,000.
