Exterior Features

Stylistically, the G63 AMG is set apart from the G550 on which it is based by an AMG front bumper design with functional mesh air intakes, unique grille design, wider front fenders, AMG side sills, and revised rear bumper. A set of 20-inch AMG wheels fronting red-painted brake calipers is standard and, like the G550, the G63 AMG includes a chrome grille guard, stainless steel running boards, exterior-mounted spare tire with a polished stainless steel cover, dark-tinted privacy glass, and dual polished side-pipe exhaust outlets.

Additional standard features include bi-xenon headlights and cornering lights, headlight washers, LED running lights, mirror-mounted LED turn signal indicators, and LED taillights. The G63 AMG is also equipped with rain-sensing wipers, front and rear park-assist sensors, electrically heated windshield, and heated power-folding exterior mirrors.

Interior Features
The 2013 Mercedes G63 AMG's handcrafted cabin is equipped with hand-fitted Designo leather covering the seats, door panels and dashboard. The interior is further enhanced with polished wood cabin trim, chrome detailing, ambient lighting, and a wood/leather steering wheel. The heated and active ventilated multi-contour front seats offer 14-way power adjustment and memory, and the G63 AMG's rear seat is heated.

Additional standard equipment includes dual-zone automatic climate control, navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity with music streaming capability, universal garage door opener, and an Mbrace 2 telematics system with a free trial subscription to service. The premium surround-sound audio system includes a hard-drive music server, satellite radio, HD Radio, DVD/CD player, USB port, SD memory card reader, auxiliary audio input jack, and an MP3 media interface.

The G63 AMG provides 79.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo space with the rear seats folded and tumbled forward.

Optional Features
The 2013 Mercedes G63 AMG includes everything as standard equipment. The only options include a choice between Burl Walnut or Designo wood trim and a limited selection of dealer-installed accessories.

Under the Hood
The twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V-8 engine installed in the G63 AMG is hand-built, according to Mercedes. It delivers 536 horsepower between 5,250 rpm and 5,750 rpm, and 561 lb.-ft. of torque between 2,000 rpm and 5,000 rpm. Mercedes says the 5,622-pound SUV accelerates to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds.

The V-8 engine is paired with a 7-speed AMG SpeedShift automatic transmission with aluminum paddle shifters, downshift rev matching, and an AMG E-Select gearshift with three driving modes including Controlled Efficiency, Sport and Manual. It directs power to a permanent all-wheel-drive system with a 2-speed transfer case and center, rear and front sequential locking differentials, which is strengthened for duty in the G63 AMG.

The G63 AMG is equipped with solid front and rear axles, tows up to 7,500 pounds, and boasts 8 inches of ground clearance. A 4-wheel electronic traction control system is standard, and this model includes an AMG sport exhaust and an AMG high-performance braking system.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG are 12/15/13 mpg (city/highway/combined).

Every G63 AMG is equipped with traction control, stability control, trailer stability assist, and an AMG high-performance braking system with ventilated and perforated brake discs. The braking system's anti-lock feature works only when all three differentials are unlocked, and the G63 AMG is equipped with brake assist, predictive brake priming, brake drying, hill-start assist, and hill-hold assist.

Four air bags are standard, including dual frontal-impact air bags and side curtain air bags for the outboard seating positions. The G63 AMG also provides standard rain-sensing wipers, reversing camera, front and rear park-assist sensors, Distronic Plus active cruise control with PreSafe Brake technology, blind-spot assist system, and tire-pressure monitoring for each individual wheel.

As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2013 Mercedes G-Class.
