Introduction
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class range includes a sedan, coupe, convertible, and a station wagon. The E-Class Coupe and E-Class Cabriolet are discussed in a separate overview, as is the performance-oriented E63 AMG.

The E-Class Sedan is a midsize luxury model competing against entries such as the Acura RLX, Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Cadillac CTS, Hyundai Genesis, Infiniti M, Jaguar XF, and Lexus GS. Only BMW and Cadillac offer alternatives to the E-Class Wagon.

Models and Features
The 2014 E-Class Sedan is sold as the E250 BlueTec in Luxury or Sport trim, the E350 in Luxury or Sport trim, the E400 Hybrid in Sport trim, and the E550 in Sport trim. The 2014 E-Class Wagon is offered only as the E350 in Luxury or Sport trim. A 4Matic all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is optional for the E250 BlueTec and E350, and standard for the E550.

Standard equipment for all models includes dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats with memory for the driver's settings, leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with transmission paddle shifters, in-dash display screen with a COMAND controller, Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming capability, and mBrace2 telematics services. The E-Class is also equipped with wood interior trim, ambient cabin lighting, power sunroof, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a universal garage door opener. Several safety-related features are also standard including rain-sensing wipers, Collision Prevention Assist technology, Pre-Safe predictive protection technology, and Attention Assist drowsy driver monitoring.

In addition to this equipment, the E350 Wagon includes a standard reversing camera and power tailgate closer. The E550 is the only model equipped with standard 4Matic AWD and leather upholstery. The rest have rear-wheel drive and MB-Tex, a synthetic leather.

Options and Packages
Mercedes offers several option packages for the 2014 E-Class models. The Premium 1 package contains a navigation system with voice-recognition technology, premium surround-sound audio system, 10-gig music hard-drive with a Gracenote song database, satellite radio with a free 6-month subscription, heated front seats, power rear-window sunshade, and a reversing camera.

In addition to this package, buyers can select a Lighting package (full LED headlights with Active Curve Illumination and Adaptive Highbeam Assist); Lane Tracking package (Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist); Driver Assistance package (Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, Pre-Safe Brake with Cross-Traffic Assist, Pre-Safe Plus); and a Parking Assist package (park-assist sensors, Active Parking Assist, Exit Surround View System).

Numerous stand-alone options are also available. The E-Class is available with 4Matic AWD, metallic paint, a selection of aluminum wheel designs, power trunk closer (Sedan), Keyless-Go passive entry with push-button ignition, and a panoramic glass roof.

Interiors can be upgraded with leather seats, wood/leather steering wheel or a flat-bottom sport steering wheel, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, active multi-contour driver's seat, split-folding rear seats (Sedan), rear-seat entertainment system, and a 115-volt power outlet.

Under the Hood
The Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec has a 2.1-liter, turbo-diesel 4-cylinder engine producing 195 horsepower at 3,800 rpm and 369 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,600 and 1,800 rpm.

E350 models get a 3.5-liter V-6 engine producing 302 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 273 lb.-ft. of torque between 3,500 and 5,250 rpm. According to Mercedes, the E350 accelerates to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds (6.6 seconds with 4Matic). The E400 Hybrid has that same 3.5-liter V-6 paired with an electric assist motor that provides an extra 27 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque.

Equipped with standard 4Matic, the E550 has a twin-turbocharged, 4.6-liter V-8 engine generating 402 horsepower between 5,000 and 5,750 rpm and 443 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,800 and 4,750 rpm. Acceleration to 60 mph takes 5.2 seconds by the automaker's stopwatch.

All E-Class models have a 7-speed automatic transmission with Economy and Sport shift programs, and paddle shifters for manual control over shifting.

Fuel Economy
Final fuel-economy estimates for the E250 BlueTec are not available as this overview is written. However, the EPA has rated the remaining 2014 E-Class models, and the E350 gets 21 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg in combined driving. Add 4Matic, and those figures drop to 20, 28, and 23, respectively. The E350 4Matic wagon is even less efficient at 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway with a combined driving rating of 21 mpg.

As is expected, the E400 Hybrid gets better gas mileage (24/30/26) while the E550 4Matic gets worse gas mileage (17/26/20).

Safety Ratings and Technology
Every 2014 E-Class is equipped with 9 standard air bags, rain-sensing wipers, predictive brake priming, automatic brake drying, a Pre-Safe predictive protection system, and mBrace2 telematics with Automatic Collision Notification, SOS Emergency Call, and Crisis Assist features. Additionally, the E-Class includes an Attention Assist drowsy driver monitoring system and Collision Prevention Assist, the latter a collision-warning and brake-assistance system.

Options for the 2014 E-Class Sedan and Wagon include a reversing camera, park-assist sensors, and an Active Cruise Control system with Steering Assist, which helps keep the E-Class centered in its lane. The E-Class can also be optioned with Pre-Safe Brake technology, Cross Traffic Assist, Pre-Safe Plus technology that Mercedes says enhances crash protection when the E-Class is hit from behind, Active Curve Illumination, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, both passive and active versions of Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist systems, and an Exit Surround View System that help the driver to see around blind corners.

The restyled 2014 E-Class had not been tested for crash protection as this overview is written.
