The Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec has a 2.1-liter, turbo-diesel 4-cylinder engine producing 195 horsepower at 3,800 rpm and 369 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,600 and 1,800 rpm.
E350 models get a 3.5-liter V-6 engine producing 302 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 273 lb.-ft. of torque between 3,500 and 5,250 rpm. According to Mercedes, the E350 accelerates to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds (6.6 seconds with 4Matic). The E400 Hybrid has that same 3.5-liter V-6 paired with an electric assist motor that provides an extra 27 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque.
Equipped with standard 4Matic, the E550 has a twin-turbocharged, 4.6-liter V-8 engine generating 402 horsepower between 5,000 and 5,750 rpm and 443 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,800 and 4,750 rpm. Acceleration to 60 mph takes 5.2 seconds by the automaker's stopwatch.
All E-Class models have a 7-speed automatic transmission with Economy and Sport shift programs, and paddle shifters for manual control over shifting.Fuel Economy
Final fuel-economy estimates for the E250 BlueTec are not available as this overview is written. However, the EPA has rated the remaining 2014 E-Class models, and the E350 gets 21 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg in combined driving. Add 4Matic, and those figures drop to 20, 28, and 23, respectively. The E350 4Matic wagon is even less efficient at 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway with a combined driving rating of 21 mpg.
As is expected, the E400 Hybrid gets better gas mileage (24/30/26) while the E550 4Matic gets worse gas mileage (17/26/20).Safety Ratings and Technology
Every 2014 E-Class is equipped with 9 standard air bags, rain-sensing wipers, predictive brake priming, automatic brake drying, a Pre-Safe predictive protection system, and mBrace2 telematics with Automatic Collision Notification, SOS Emergency Call, and Crisis Assist features.
