Overview

What's New for 2013:

  • Standard Mbrace 2 telematics system

Exterior Features
Mercedes-Benz refers to the 2013 CLS-Class as a 4-door coupe. It is based on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class platform and sold as the CLS550 and the performance-tuned CLS63 AMG. This overview focuses on the CLS63 AMG model.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG comes standard with bi-xenon headlights, LED running lights, LED taillights, AMG body kit, and 19-inch AMG-design aluminum wheels.

Interior Features
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG is differentiated from the CLS550 on which it is based by premium Nappa leather upholstery, AMG front sport seats, an AMG performance steering wheel with power tilt/telescoping operation, AMG instrumentation, sport pedals, AMG sill plates, and an AMG E-Select shifter lever.

Otherwise, the 2013 CLS63 AMG is equipped like a CLS550, including dual-zone automatic climate control, power sunroof, ambient cabin lighting, universal garage door opener, and a full-length center console separating the individual rear seats. The sound system includes 14 speakers, satellite radio, HD Radio, CD/DVD changer, and a 10-gigabyte digital music hard drive. Bluetooth connectivity with music streaming capability is also standard, along with split-fold rear seats.

Optional Features
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG is offered with several option packages. The Premium 1 package includes an active multi-contour driver's seat, heated and ventilated front seats, LED headlights with automatic high beams and Active Curve Illumination, Keyless Go entry and ignition, power-closing trunk, and a reversing camera. A Lane Tracking package (blind-spot assist, lane-keeping assist) and a Driver Assistance package (active blind-spot assist, active lane-keeping assist, active cruise control with Pre-Safe Brake) are also available, as well as an AMG Performance package that increases the engine's horsepower, torque and top speed.

Additional options for the CLS63 AMG include Night View Assist Plus with Pedestrian Detection, active park-assist system, AMG illuminated doorsills, and rear side-impact air bags. The car can also be equipped with a carbon fiber rear spoiler, carbon fiber interior trim, limited-slip rear differential, and an AMG Carbon Ceramic braking system. Mercedes offers unique paint and interior combinations for the CLS63 AMG through its Designo tailoring program.

Under the Hood
A twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V-8 engine is installed under the CLS63 AMG's hood. It delivers 518 horsepower from 5,250 to 5,750 rpm and 516 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,750 rpm and 5,000 rpm. When the optional AMG Performance package is added, the CLS63 AMG generates 550 horsepower, 590 lb.-ft. of torque, and offers a top speed of 186 mph, according to Mercedes.

A 7-speed AMG SpeedShift MCT sports transmission drives the CLS63 AMG's rear wheels, and the car is equipped with automatic start/stop technology that shuts the engine off when idling in an effort to conserve fuel.

The 2013 CLS63 AMG rides on an AMG Ride Control sports suspension with Active Body Control. Additional hardware upgrades over a standard CLS550 include an AMG high-performance compound braking system, AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, and a 3-stage stability control system.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG are 16/25/19 mpg (city/highway/combined).

Safety
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG is equipped with 10 air bags, 3-stage traction and stability control system, and 4-wheel-disc AMG performance braking system with brake assist, predictive brake priming, and automatic brake drying. This performance luxury sedan is also equipped with hill-start assist, hill-hold assist, rain-sensing wipers, and an Attention Assist drowsy driver detection system.

Options include a blind-spot monitoring system and a lane-departure warning system. For additional cost, each of these systems adds technology that can actively correct the vehicle's course if the driver is unresponsive to audible warnings. The active versions of these features are bundled with Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control with Pre-Safe Brake technology. With this system, the car automatically maintains a safe distance from traffic ahead, automatically accelerating and braking as is necessary. Pre-Safe Brake readies the braking system to provide maximum stopping power if the sensors detect an imminent danger, and can prepare the car for a crash by closing the windows and repositioning the seats for impact.

A Night View Assist Plus with Pedestrian Detection system displays infrared images of the road ahead, including pedestrians that may have stepped into the darkened road.

As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG.
