Mercedes-Benz calls its CLS-Class a "four-door coupe" It's technically a sedan, but its stance and sporty appearance do create the look of a coupe. The CLS-Class is a high-performance luxury car that's available with one of two V-8 engines; the larger, with the optional Performance package, makes a top speed of 186 mph, according to the manufacturer. The 2011 model is mainly a carryover from the previous year, but some previously optional features have been added as standard.

The two trim levels for the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class are the CLS550 and the CLS63 AMG. The base CLS550 features 18-inch cast aluminum wheels with high-performance tires, adaptive air suspension, sunroof, 4-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, hard-drive-based navigation system, 13-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system, and a long list of power accessories. Nineteen-inch wheels are also available. Standard on the CLS63 AMG are 19-inch wheels, a sportier exterior, special brakes to go with its V-8 engine, plus upgraded upholstery, AMG-tuned sport suspension, and sport front seats. Various option packages can add larger wheels, limited-slip differential, a premium Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system, track-calibrated suspension settings, and many other features.

Standard on the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 is a 382-horsepower, 5.5-liter V-8 engine. The CLS63 AMG features a 507-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 engine, which produces 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines work with a 7-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. According to the EPA, the 5.5-liter engine delivers 14 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway; the larger engine delivers 12 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class include an emergency telematics system, anti-lock brakes, stability control, active front head restraints, and a full complement of air bags. Mercedes-Benz's Pre-Safe system closes the sunroof and braces passengers if impact is imminent.

Starting MSRPs for the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS Class ranged from $74,000 to just under $100,000.
