Introduction
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a line of entry-level luxury vehicles, available as sedan or coupe, with rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Its main competitors include the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac CTS, and the Acura TL. The C-Class lineup for 2014 includes the C250, C350, and C63 AMG (available as coupe or sedan), the C300 4Matic Sport Sedan, and the C350 4Matic Coupe. (The 4Matics are the AWD versions.) A long menu of custom options includes packages plus individual options and accessories.

Models and Features
The C250 and C300 Sedans come in Sport or Luxury trim. These vary slightly as do suspension, steering wheel design, and grille design. Standard on the C250 and C300 4Matic are 17-in. alloy wheels, sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, 8-way power front seats, split-folding rear seats, and vinyl upholstery. The Mercedes COMAND interface includes a 5.8-in. display screen, emergency communications, connectivity for phone and audio, and a sound system. The C350 comes in Sport trim only and features larger wheels, plus certain features that are offered as options on the C250. The C350 Coupe features a panoramic sunroof. The C63 AMG is the high-performance, high-style model, and includes a sportier suspension, upgraded brakes, tires, and seats, and a higher-powered engine.

Options and Packages
At the base C250 trim level, option packages include Sport Plus, which adds 18-in. 7-spoke wheels, rear lip spoiler, gloss black side mirrors, front sport seats, upgraded upholstery with red top stitching, red or black seat belts, racing-inspired suspension, higher-performance brakes and exhaust, and a flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters. The Lighting package adds bi-xenon headlights and adaptive high-beam assist. The Leather package adds leather upholstery in a choice of red, black, ash, or mocha, as well as a 14-way power front passenger seat with memory. Two types of wood trim have limited availability. Illuminated door sills are another interior option. The Premium package adds a media interface, SiriusXM radio with 6-month trial, Harman-Kardon surround-sound system, and heated front seats. The Multimedia package includes a rear-view camera, voice control, navigation system, SiriusXM traffic and weather, and a 100-GB music register. Many of these features are available as individual options. The Driver Assistance package features Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control, which adapts speed to traffic flow. The package also includes active blind-spot assist and active lane-keeping assist, with those last two features also available as a separate package. Various baby and toddler seats are also available.

On the C63 AMG, the Edition 507 package increases engine output to 507 horsepower and 457 lb.-ft. of torque, and adds 19-in. wheels, a compound braking system, premium leather upholstery, and various other styling upgrades.

Under The Hood
The base engine on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a 201-horsepower, 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that makes 229 lb.-ft. of torque. It's mated with a 7-speed automatic transmission. The C300 4Matic upgrades to AWD and a 248-horsepower V-6 engine that produces 251 lb.-ft. of torque. The C350 employs a more powerful V-6 (302 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque). The C63 AMG boasts a 451-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 engine that makes 443. lb.-ft. of torque and can be supercharged to 507 horsepower.

Fuel Economy
The EPA's fuel-economy ratings for the 2014 C-Class are 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway/25 mpg combined for the C250; 20/27/22 mpg for the C300; 20/29/23 mpg for the C350 with RWD; 19/27/22 mpg for the C350 with AWD; and 13/19/15 mpg for the high-performance C63 AMG.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Standard safety features on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class include a full complement of air bags, front and rear head protection, advanced tire-pressure monitoring system, electronic stability program, rain-sensing wipers, anti-lock brakes, and brake assist. Many optional safety features are available, including blind-spot assist, lane-keeping assist, and more active versions of both. Parktronic with advanced parking guidance, and bi-xenon headlights with active curve illumination are also available.

In crash testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 C-Class Sedan received a 5-star overall rating--the highest possible?with 5 stars for side crash tests and 4 for frontal crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the C-Class its top rating of "Good" in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact, and roof-strength crash tests.
