Introduction
The 2015 Mazda 6 is a midsize family sedan, making it a member of one of the most competitive vehicle classes on the market. The Mazda 6 goes head-to-head against the Buick Regal, Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat.

Models and Features
Three versions of the Mazda 6 are on sale for 2015. The least expensive is the Sport, which comes standard with a manual gearbox. Select the optional automatic transmission, and the Mazda 6 Sport is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming, SMS text-messaging capability, an E911 emergency notification service, and a 5.8-in. color touch-screen display with a reversing camera.

These features are standard for the Mazda 6 Touring with the standard manual transmission. Additionally, the Touring features leatherette seat upholstery, power-adjustable driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear-seat vents, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a set of 19-in. aluminum wheels.

The Mazda 6 Grand Touring sits atop the lineup, equipped with a standard automatic transmission with paddle shifters, leather seats, power moonroof, 11-speaker Bose premium audio system with satellite radio, navigation system with real-time traffic updates, and automatic on/off bi-xenon headlights with LED running lights and an adaptive front-lighting system. The Grand Touring also includes fog lights, heated front seats, heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, universal garage door opener, rear lip spoiler, and a unique wheel finish to help distinguish it as the top-of-the-line trim level.

Smart City Brake Support is also standard for the Mazda 6 Grand Touring, a laser-based autonomous braking system that works at low speeds to prepare the braking system for full braking power or, if the driver fails to respond to the perceived threat, to reduce speed prior to an unavoidable collision.

Options and Packages
Aside from the automatic transmission and the infotainment system that are paired together for the Mazda 6 Sport, the base version of this car is offered only with premium paint color choices and dealer-installed upgrades.

Choose the Touring trim level with the automatic transmission and the 2015 Mazda 6 is available with a new Bose/Moonroof package that adds an 11-speaker premium sound system, satellite radio, and a power moonroof. Versions already equipped with this upgrade can also be fitted with a Touring Technology package containing a navigation system with real-time traffic updates, Smart City Brake Support system, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, and more.

Extras exclusive to the Mazda 6 Grand Touring are bundled into the Grand Touring Technology package. They include radar-based cruise control, forward-obstruction warning, lane-departure warning, and high beam control systems. This package also contains Mazda's i-eLoop technology and a set of active grille shutters. The i-eLoop system converts kinetic energy produced by braking into electrical energy that powers the vehicle's various features, helping to improve fuel economy, Mazda says.

Under the Hood
Every 2015 Mazda 6 is equipped with a 184-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine from the automaker's SkyActiv family of fuel-efficient powertrains. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard for the Sport and Touring trim levels, with a 6-speed automatic transmission optional. The automatic is standard for the Mazda 6 Grand Touring.

Fuel Economy
With the standard manual gearbox, the 2015 Mazda 6 is rated to get 25 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. With the automatic transmission those ratings rise to 26 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. The Grand Touring version with the optional Technology package, which contains i-eLoop regeneration and active grille shutters, is EPA-rated to return 28 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the 2015 Mazda 6 received a rating of 5 stars (out of 5), and the sedan received no lower than a 4-star rating in any individual test parameter. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not officially rated the 2015 Mazda 6 as this overview is written.

All versions of the 2015 Mazda 6 except for the Sport with the manual transmission are equipped with E911 emergency-notification system service, which can help speed rescuers to the scene of an accident following an air bag deployment. The Mazda 6 Touring adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert as standard equipment, while the Grand Touring is equipped with an adaptive front-lighting system and Smart City Brake Support.

In addition to these features, the Grand Touring can be upgraded with forward-obstruction warning, lane-departure warning, and high-beam control systems.
