Introduction
The 2014 Mazda 6 is a midsize family sedan offered in Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trim levels. Redesigned for 2014, the Mazda 6 competes in one of the broadest and most competitive automotive segments, which includes the Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat.

Models and Features
The 2014 Mazda 6 Sport is the least expensive version of this new family sedan, and can be identified by its 17-inch aluminum wheels, cloth seats, and standard manual transmission. Choose the optional automatic transmission, and the Mazda 6 Sport adds a 5.8-inch color touch-screen display, reversing camera, Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming, SMS text messaging capability, Pandora Internet radio, HD Radio, and E911 Emergency Notification service.

The mid-grade version is called the Mazda 6 Touring. This model adds 19-inch wheels, leatherette seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, 6-way power driver's seat, and a "Commander Switch" used to operate the in-dash touch-screen functions. Touring models also include a blind-spot monitoring system and a rear cross-traffic alert system.

The Mazda 6 Grand Touring is equipped with bi-xenon headlights, adaptive front lighting system, LED running lights, fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, rear lip spoiler, and a premium finish for the 19-inch wheels. Additionally, a power sunroof, heated exterior mirrors, auto-dimming driver's side mirror, auto-dimming rearview mirror, universal garage door opener, and a Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry system with push-button ignition are standard for this version.

Leather seats are installed in the Grand Touring trim level, which also has heated front seats, an 11-speaker Bose Centerpoint AudioPilot premium sound system, navigation system with real-time traffic, satellite radio, alarm system, and Smart City Brake Support technology.

Options and Packages
A Touring Technology package adds the Bose Centerpoint premium audio system, navigation system, Smart City Brake Support, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, heated side mirrors, auto-dimming mirrors, and a universal garage door opener to the Mazda 6 Touring version. The Mazda 6 Grand Touring is exclusively offered with Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Forward Obstruction Warning, lane-departure warning, High Beam Control, and an i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system.

Soul Red and Crystal White paint cost extra, and Mazda dealers can install a variety of accessories on any of the three Mazda 6 trim levels.

Under the Hood
Initially, the 2014 Mazda 6 is offered solely with a new SkyActiv-G 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine equipped with direct fuel injection. This engine generates 184 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 185 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,250 rpm while meeting Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) regulations in certain regions of the country.

During the second half of 2013, Mazda plans to offer the redesigned Mazda 6 with a new SkyActiv-D 2.2-liter clean diesel 4-cylinder engine. Horsepower, torque, and fuel-economy specifications will be available closer to this engine's debut.

Fuel Economy
As rated by the EPA, the 2014 Mazda 6 is expected to achieve the following fuel-economy estimates:
  • Manual transmission: 25/37/29 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • Automatic transmission: 16/38/30 mpg

Safety Ratings and Technology
The 2014 Mazda 6 is named a "Top Safety Pick Plus" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), reflecting "Good" ratings in all four primary crash-test evaluations combined with an "Acceptable" rating in the tough new small overlap frontal-impact assessment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not performed crash tests on this model as this article is written.

All 2014 Mazda 6 models except for the Sport with the manual transmission are equipped with SMS text messaging capability, Pandora Internet radio compatibility, reversing camera, and an E911 emergency notification system, which helps speed rescuers to the scene of an accident after the car's air bags have deployed.

The Mazda 6 Touring is equipped with a standard blind-spot monitoring system and a rear cross-traffic alert system, and can be upgraded with Smart City Brake Support, which operates at speeds under 19 mph to ready the braking system for maximum braking power or to autonomously apply the brakes and lessen impact force in the event sensors identify a pedestrian or a stopped vehicle ahead.

Smart City Brake Support is standard for the Mazda 6 Grand Touring, along with active headlights that help to illuminate around dark corners. This version can also be equipped with a radar cruise control system that maintains safe following distances to traffic ahead, and a Forward Obstruction Warning system that identifies objects in the road ahead and warns the driver to take corrective action.

In addition to these safety-related technologies, the Mazda 6 Touring and Grand Touring can be optioned with a navigation system, and the Grand Touring version offers an optional i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system designed to capture kinetic energy from the act of braking to operate the car's electrical systems. At some point after the car's initial debut, the Grand Touring will be offered with lane-departure warning and automatic High Beam Control, which will automatically activate the high-beam headlights whenever conditions are favorable.
