The Mazda 5 is a small front-wheel-drive minivan that features an all-new design for the 2012 model year. According to Mazda, the Mazda 5 is exceptionally maneuverable for a minivan. The Mazda 5 features three rows of two seats each, and is available in three trims. The base trim, Sport, features 16-inch alloy wheels and keyless entry; the Touring trim upgrades to 17-inch alloy wheels and adds fog lights and a rear spoiler. The Grand Touring trim adds automatic Xenon headlights, automatic wipers, and heated mirrors.
Standard features on the 2012 Mazda 5 Sport trim include automatic climate control, cruise control, 6-speaker sound system, and some power accessories. The Touring trim comes with Bluetooth connectivity, trip computer, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Grand Touring trim includes a sunroof and an upgraded sound system (including satellite radio), which are both optional on the Touring trim. The Grand Touring trim also offers leather upholstery (including heated front seats) and includes more power adjustments. With all seats up, rear cargo space is 5.5 cubic feet; with third-row seats folded down, cargo capacity is 44.4 cubic feet.
Optional features on the Mazda 5 include remote ignition as a dealer-installed option, and a DVD-based entertainment system, portable navigation system, and an iPod interface.
Under the Hood
The standard power plant in the 2012 Mazda 5 is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 157 horsepower. The engine is mated with a 6-speed manual transmission on the Sport, and a 5-speed automatic transmission on the Touring and Grand Touring trims. The automatic gearbox is optional on the Sport trim.
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Mazda 5 with either transmission are 26/34/29 mpg (city/highway/combined).
Standard safety features on the Mazda 5 include 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, traction control, front-seat side air bags, and side curtain air bags.
To date, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have tested the 2012 Mazda 5.
