What Changed for 2009:

  • New Liquid Silver exterior color to replace Sunlight Silver (late availability)
  • Sand interior color now available with Stormy Blue and Brilliant Black exterior colors
Mazda introduced the Mazda 5 in 2006 as a "mini" minivan, with 4-cylinder power and seating for 6. It replaced the larger MPV, which had seating for 7 and V-6 power. The Mazda 5 is based on the Mazda 3 platform, but its wheelbase is 4.4 inches longer and the overall length is 4.3 inches longer. Like the Mazda 3, it offers only front-wheel drive. Its smaller size and Mazda 3 roots make the Mazda 5 sportier than other minivans. The Mazda 5 has sliding rear side doors and three rows of seats, including first- and second-row buckets and a 2-passenger, 50/50-split folding third-row bench. The second-row seats recline, fold flat, and slide fore and aft. The third-row seats tip forward individually and fold flat. With the second- and third-row seats folded, the Mazda 5 has 70.9 cubic feet of cargo volume. Since the Mazda 5 was cosmetically revised for 2008, only color changes have been made for 2009.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Mazda 5 is offered in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trim levels. Standard equipment on the Sport includes cloth upholstery; air conditioning; tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls; cruise control; manual driver's seat height and lumbar adjustments; power windows, mirrors and door locks; remote keyless entry; AM/FM/CD stereo; auxiliary input jack; roof rack; and P205/50R17 tires on alloy wheels. Touring models add automatic climate control; leather-wrapped steering wheel; 6-disc CD changer; a second-row foldout table; fog lights; and a rear spoiler. Touring models get leather upholstery; heated front seats; heated exterior mirrors; a Bluetooth wireless cell phone link; rain-sensing wipers; and automatic Xenon headlights. Options include a sunroof; DVD-based navigation system; rear DVD entertainment system; Sirius satellite radio with free 6-month subscription; remote engine starting; rear cargo cover; auto-dimming rearview mirror; and a universal garage door opener.

The 2009 Mazda 5 is powered by an all-aluminum, dual overhead cam, 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine. It makes 153 hp at 6500 rpm and 148 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard for the Sport model. A 5-speed automatic transmission with a manual shiftgate is optional for the Sport and standard on Touring and Grand Touring models. EPA fuel-economy ratings are 22 mpg city/28 mpg highway with the manual transmission and 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway with the automatic. The Mazda 5 is not rated for towing.

Standard safety equipment on the 2009 Mazda 5 includes dual front air bags; torso-protecting front side air bags; head-protecting side curtain air bags for all three rows; tire-pressure monitor; and anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and brake assist (BA). Traction control and electronic stability control are not available.

The Mazda 5 has been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and received a 5-star frontal rating for the driver and front-seat passenger, as well as side-impact driver rating. It received a 4-star rating for rear passengers in a side impact, and 4 stars for rollover protection. At the time of publication, it had not been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Mazda 5 features several useful technologies, such as Bluetooth hands-free connectivity that allows pairing up to seven different phones for multiple drivers. With Bluetooth, you can import your entire phone book into the navigation system for quick access, and can initiate calls using the voice-recognition feature so operation is safe and fast. The Mazda 5 also features a DVD-based navigation system with a 7-inch touch screen, voice-activated commands for added safety on the road, automatic rerouting, and millions of points of interest options. All Mazda 5 models also come standard with Sirius satellite radio capability.
