Overview
Mazda introduced the Mazda5 in 2006 as a "mini" minivan, with 4-cylinder power and seating for 6. It replaced the larger MPV, which had seating for 7 and V-6 power. The Mazda5 is based on the Mazda3 platform, but its wheelbase is 4.4 inches longer and the overall length is 4.3 inches longer. Like the Mazda3, it offers only front-wheel drive. Its smaller size and Mazda3 roots make the Mazda5 sportier than other minivans. The Mazda5 has sliding rear side doors and three rows of seats, including first- and second-row buckets and a 2-passenger, 50/50-split folding third-row bench. The second-row seats recline, fold flat, and slide fore and aft. The third-row seats tip forward individually and fold flat. With the second- and third-row seats folded, the Mazda5 has 70.9 cubic feet of cargo volume.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Mazda5 is offered in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trim levels. Standard equipment on the Sport includes cloth upholstery; air conditioning; interior air filter; tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls; cruise control; manual driver's seat height and lumbar adjustments; second-row adjustable bucket seats; third-row 50/50-split folding bench seat; power windows, mirrors and door locks; remote keyless entry; AM/FM/CD stereo; auxiliary input jack; roof rack; and P205/50R17 tires on alloy wheels. Touring models add automatic climate control; leather-wrapped steering wheel; 6-disc CD changer; a second-row foldout table; fog lights; and a rear spoiler. Touring models get leather upholstery; heated front seats; heated exterior mirrors; a Bluetooth wireless cell phone link; rain-sensing wipers; automatic headlights; and Xenon headlights. Options include a sunroof; DVD-based navigation system; a rear DVD entertainment system; Sirius satellite radio with 6-month subscription; remote engine starting; a rear cargo cover; an auto-dimming rearview mirror; and a universal garage door opener.

Powertrain
The 2008 Mazda5 is powered by an all-aluminum, dual overhead cam, 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine. It makes 153 hp at 6500 rpm and 148 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard for the Sport model. A 5-speed automatic transmission with a manual shiftgate is optional for the Sport and standard otherwise. EPA fuel economy ratings are 22 mpg city/28 mpg highway with the manual transmission and 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway with the automatic. The Mazda5 is not rated for towing.

Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2008 Mazda5 includes dual front air bags; torso-protecting front side air bags; head-protecting curtain side air bags for all seating rows; a tire-pressure monitor; and anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and brake assist (BA). Traction control and electronic stability control are not available. The Mazda5 has not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Technology
The ABS pulses the brakes to help decrease stopping distances, minimize the chance of skids, and allow drivers to steer when braking hard. EBD automatically balances front-to-rear braking forces to optimize stopping power and braking stability. BA provides full braking power in emergency braking situations.
