What's New for 2014:

  • Completely redesigned
  • Fuel-efficient Skyactiv engines
  • Numerous new safety technologies
  • Available Mazda Connect infotainment system
  • Optional Active Driving Display

The redesigned 2014 Mazda 3 is a compact car offered as a 4-door sedan and a 5-door hatchback. It competes directly with the Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte, Mitsubishi Lancer, and Subaru Impreza, each of which offers buyers a choice between a sedan and a hatchback. Additional competitors include the Chevrolet Cruze, Dodge Dart, Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Golf, and Volkswagen Jetta.

Models and Features
Mazda offers the Mazda 3 in two model series. The Mazda 3i has the standard 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the Mazda 3s has the more powerful 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. The former is available in SV, Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trim levels, while the latter is sold only in Touring and Grand Touring trim.

Upgrade from Mazda 3i SV trim to 3i Sport trim for Bluetooth connectivity, a CD player, cruise control, body-color exterior mirrors, additional cabin lighting, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. The 3i Touring trim level adds aluminum wheels, upgraded exterior and interior trim, premium cloth for the seats, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators, a keyless entry system with push-button starting, and a rear-seat center armrest. The Touring version also contains a blind-spot monitoring system and a rear cross-traffic alert system.

At the top of the Mazda 3i lineup, the Grand Touring trim level is equipped with leatherette seats, a power driver's seat, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, premium audio system, navigation system with a reversing camera, and a power sunroof. The Grand Touring trim level also adds Mazda Connect technology, which includes E911 Automatic Emergency Notification service, text-messaging capability, and access to a variety of Internet radio providers.

If you decide to go with the more powerful version of the car, the Mazda 3s, the Touring trim level is required at a minimum. In addition to the features included for the Mazda 3i Touring, the Mazda 3s Touring includes an automatic transmission, larger brakes, and 18-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in bigger tires. This car's bi-xenon headlights, fog lights, LED running lights, and LED taillights help to visually separate it from the less powerful versions of the car, and the Mazda 3s Touring also gets standard dual-zone automatic climate control, a premium audio system, Mazda Connect technology, and unique gauges with an Active Driving Display that is similar to a head-up display.

The most expensive version of the new 2014 Mazda 3 is the 3s Grand Touring. In addition to perforated leather upholstery, the 3s Grand Touring is equipped with automatic headlights, an adaptive front-lighting system that swivels the headlights to help see around dark corners, rain-sensing wipers, power sunroof, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Options and Packages
Mazda dealers offer buyers a lengthy menu of upgrades. Highlights include rear park-assist sensors, remote engine starting, splash guards, cargo solutions, an alloy pedal kit, first aid kit, and more.

Factory upgrades are limited to Technology packages offered for the Mazda 3i Touring and the Mazda 3s Grand Touring. Applied to the 3i Touring, this option package adds Mazda Connect, a navigation system, premium audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and more.

Installed in the 3s Grand Touring, the Technology package contains exclusive features like Mazda's i-ELOOP regenerative braking system, a lane-departure warning system, Smart City Brake Support technology, automatic high-beam headlight control, and active grille shutters.

Under the Hood
A 155-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is installed in the Mazda 3i, driving the car's front wheels through a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift gate. The Mazda 3s is equipped with a 184-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, a standard automatic transmission, bigger brakes, and larger wheels and tires.

Fuel Economy
The 2014 Mazda 3's EPA fuel-economy ratings depend on both powertrain selection and body style. The most fuel-efficient model is the Mazda 3i Sedan with the automatic transmission, rated to get 30 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway. The least fuel-efficient model is the Mazda 3s 5-Door at 28 mpg city/38 mpg highway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2014 Mazda 3 as this overview is written.

All Mazda 3 models except for the 3i SV and 3i Sport are equipped with a blind-spot monitoring system and a rear cross-traffic alert system. Optional for the 3i Touring model, and standard on the 3s Touring and all Grand Touring models, Mazda Connect service includes E911 Automatic Emergency Notification, which activates when an air bag deploys to help rescuers locate the vehicle. A reversing camera is also included for vehicles equipped with Mazda Connect.

The most expensive version of the car, the Mazda 3s Grand Touring, includes an adaptive front-lighting system. It can also be optioned with automatic high-beam headlight controls, a lane-departure warning system, and Mazda's Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system. The SCBS system automatically applies the car's brakes when traveling at low speeds in order to prevent collisions, or to reduce speed before impact.

In the near future, Mazda also plans to offer a radar-based cruise control system with Forward Obstruction Warning.
