Overview

What's New for 2014:

  • Jet Black, Blue Reflex, and Zeal Red paint colors

Introduction
The 2014 Mazda 2 is a front-wheel-drive (FWD), 5-passenger, 4-door hatchback available in Sport and Touring trim levels, both powered by a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine. Competitors include the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Nissan Versa Note, Scion xD, and the Toyota Yaris.

Models and Features
Mazda has affixed the Sport name to the base version of its Mazda 2 model, one that features standard items like 15-in. steel wheels, air conditioning, power outside mirrors, power windows and door locks, and keyless entry. This variant also offers cloth upholstery, tilt steering wheel, height-adjustable driver's seat and 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and an audio system with USB and auxiliary input jacks.

A move up to the Mazda 2 Touring trim level brings with it a set of 15-in. alloy wheels, fog lights, rear spoiler, leather interior accents, cruise control, and premium cloth upholstery.

Options and Packages
Options for the 2014 Mazda 2 aren't exactly plentiful, but some of today's must-have amenities have made the cut. Among them are Bluetooth connectivity, front center armrest, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a portable navigation system.

Under the Hood
Forward momentum for the 2014 Mazda 2 comes from a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 100 horsepower and 98 lb.-ft. of torque, output that's directed to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Economy
Though its small size might suggest otherwise, the Mazda 2 is not a member of the growing 40-mpg club. In fact, the most efficient version of this subcompact averages 35 mpg on the highway and just 29 mpg in the city. That's what you can expect with the manual transmission; selecting the automatic cuts another mpg off those figures.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Mazda 2 earned a "Marginal" rating for small overlap front-impact protection. As this overview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not rated the 2014 Scion xB. In terms of safety equipment, the 2014 Mazda 2 features 6 air bags and 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (front disc/rear drum) with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution.
