Overview
Mazda, a Japanese automaker, reinvigorated the venerable British-style 2-seat roadster in 1989 when it launched the Miata. In 2006, the Miata underwent its second redesign, maintaining its manual-folding soft top and adding MX-5 to the name. Mazda added an available power-retracting hardtop in 2007. Mazda calls it the Power Retractable Hard Top, or PRHT, and considers it a separate model. Both tops have a heated glass rear window. The MX-5 Miata has rear-wheel drive (RWD) and 4-cylinder power. The small trunk offers 5.3 cubic feet of storage space.

Model Lineup
Both soft- and hardtop versions of the 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata are available in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trim, and there's a lower-cost SV (Special Value) version of the soft-top as well. The SV has cloth upholstery; tilt steering wheel; driver's seat height adjustment; power mirrors and windows; AM/FM/CD audio system; theft-deterrent system; pop-up wind blocker; manual convertible top; and P205/55R16 tires on alloy wheels. The Sport soft-top model with the manual transmission adds air conditioning and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Sport soft-top and hardtop with the automatic transmission add cruise control; power door locks; remote keyless entry; steering wheel audio controls; and fog lights. The Touring trim has a 6-disc CD changer and P205/45R17 tires. Grand Touring models get heated leather seats and a Bose audio system. Options include keyless engine starting; a limited-slip differential; Xenon headlights; alarm; sport suspension; Sirius satellite radio; run-flat tires; rear spoiler; aluminum interior trim; and an Appearance package with a front air dam and side and rear skirts.

Powertrain
Power for the 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata is supplied by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 166 hp at 6700 rpm and 140 lb.-ft. of torque at 5000 rpm. This dual-overhead cam engine has variable intake valve timing and revs to a 6700 rpm redline. In the SV model, it is linked to a 5-speed manual transmission. Sport models offer the 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with a manual shiftgate. Touring and Grand Touring models have a 6-speed manual or the 6-speed automatic. EPA fuel economy figures are 22 mpg city/27 mpg highway with the 5-speed manual transmission; 21 mpg city/28 mpg highway with the 6-speed manual transmission; and 20 mpg city/ 27 mpg highway with the automatic transmission.

Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata includes dual front air bags; torso-protecting side air bags; anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes; and a tire-pressure monitor. Traction control and electronic stability control are available for the Grand Touring model. The Mazda MX-5 Miata has not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Technology
Mazda says the available hardtop on the Mazda MX-5 Miata is the fastest power-operated retractable roof available in the United States, opening or closing in 12 seconds. When closed, it does not compromise the MX-5 Miata's trunk space. Traction control detects wheel slip and uses the anti-lock braking system (ABS) to limit it. Electronic stability control uses sensors to detect the vehicle's intended direction versus its actual direction. If the vehicle is off its intended path, the system activates individual brakes through the ABS to put the vehicle back on its intended path, Mazda explains.
