Exterior Features
The Mazda CX-9 is a 7-passenger, mid crossover SUV that shares an engine and vehicle platform with the Ford Edge. The CX-9 is available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD) in three trims: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. The base model, the CX-9 Sport, features 18-inch alloy wheels; the Grand Touring upgrades to 20-inch wheels and adds automatic wipers, Xenon headlights, and fog lights. Properly equipped, the CX-9 can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
Interior Features
Standard interior features on the 2012 Mazda CX-9 include 3-zone automatic climate control, trip computer, Bluetooth connectivity, and steering-wheel-mounted controls for the 6-speaker sound system and the cruise control. The CX-9 Touring trim includes leather upholstery with heated front seats, heated mirrors, automatic headlights, and more power accessories. The Grand Touring trim adds keyless entry and ignition, many interior upgrades, and a blind-spot warning system. Sliding second-row seats and fold-down third-row seats are standard on all CX-9 trims. Maximum cargo space with both of the back rows folded flat is 101 cubic feet.
Optional Features
Exterior options at various trim levels of the CX-9 include roof rails, sunroof, power tailgate, and upgraded wheels and lights. Interior options include a navigation system, rear-seat entertainment system, premium Bose surround-sound system, and a rearview camera.
Under the Hood
The Mazda CX-9 standard power plant is a 3.7-liter V-6 engine rated at 273 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque and mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift controls.

EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2012 Mazda CX-9 are:- CX-9 with FWD: 17/24/19 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- CX-9 with AWD: 16/22/19 mpg
Safety
Standard safety features on the 2012 Mazda CX-9 include anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, rollover sensor, front-seat side air bags, full-length side curtain air bags, and active front head restraints. Other safety features are optional.
To date, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not tested the 2012 Mazda CX-9. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the CX-9 received "Good" ratings--the Institute's highest--for frontal-offset and side-impact crash protection, and a "Marginal" rating for roof strength.
