The CX-9 crossover sport utility is the newest offering from Mazda and launches as a 2007 model. It is a 7-passenger vehicle and its chassis also provides the basis for the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX .
For 2006, Mazda launched its CX-7 crossover sport utility vehicle and, for 2007, adds the larger CX-9 version that is built on a separate (not just lengthened) chassis and provides room for a third row of seating. The CX-9 is a midsize crossover utility with 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space between the upright third-row seat and the rear liftgate. To enhance passenger comfort, the second row slides fore and aft up to 5 inches. The CX-9 also comes with a larger and more powerful engine than the CX-7; while the CX-7 has a turbocharged 4-cylinder powerplant, the CX-9 gets a 263-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The CX-9 is available with front- or all-wheel drive for enhanced traction in inclement weather or other low-traction conditions.
The CX-9 is available in Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring versions. All have standard air conditioning, power windows/locks and remote keyless entry, cruise control, six air bags (including side curtain air bags), and offer a choice of black or beige interior. The Sport rides on 18-inch wheels, has halogen headlamps, and comes with cloth seating surfaces. The Touring model adds leather, power front-seat adjustment and, for the first time on a Mazda, Bluetooth hands-free telephone capability. The Grand Touring adds 20-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, exterior mirrors with turn indicators, a memory driver's seat, an advanced keyless start system, wood trim, indirect blue interior lighting, and more.
The Mazda CX-9 competes in the Midsize Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) segment, which consists of 13 models. Buyers in this segment look for comfort, reliability, and quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM
The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM were the Toyota Highlander (129,794 units sold), Nissan Murano (81,362), and Chrysler Pacifica (78,243). Other models offered in the Midsize CUV segment include the Ford Freestyle, Buick Rendezvous, Subaru B9 Tribeca, and Hyundai Santa Fe. Joining the segment in 2007 are the Ford Edge, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook.
