  • Expanded infotainment features

Introduction
The 2014 Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV able to seat five people. It competes against a long list of models including the Buick Encore, Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Models and Features
Three versions of the 2014 Mazda CX-5 are on sale: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. Upgrading from Sport to Touring trim adds a larger and more powerful engine, standard automatic transmission, fog lights, and interior upgrades including a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, nicer cloth upholstery, 6-way power driver's seat, rear-seat center armrest with cupholders, and a 40/20/40-split folding rear seatback that replaces the standard 60/40-split design.

The CX-5 Touring is also equipped with a 5.8-inch color touch-screen infotainment system with Bluetooth (including music streaming), HD Radio, Pandora Internet Radio, SMS text messaging capability, and voice-recognition technology. A reversing camera and a blind-spot monitoring system are standard for the Touring trim level, as well as E911 emergency notification service, which automatically alerts authorities in the event of an air bag deployment.

Choose the CX-5 Grand Touring to enjoy standard automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, heated exterior mirrors, and 19-inch aluminum wheels with larger tires. Inside, the Grand Touring version is equipped with leather, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, premium surround-sound audio system with satellite radio, and a power sunroof.

Options and Packages
Each 2014 Mazda CX-5 model can be optioned with an Active Torque Split all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, extra-cost paint, and a variety of dealer add-ons including rear park-assist sensors, remote engine starting, roof rack, and a variety of cargo solutions. Additional upgrades are contained in option packages.

A Bluetooth Audio package (5.8-inch color touch-screen infotainment system, SMS text messaging, E911 automatic emergency notification, Pandora, HD Radio) is offered for the CX-5 Sport trim level, and this version of the crossover can be equipped with an automatic transmission.

Touring models can be outfitted with a self-explanatory Moonroof and Bose Audio package as well as a Technology package containing a navigation system, rain-sensing wipers, Smart City Brake Support, bi-xenon automatic headlights with an adaptive front-lighting system, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with universal garage door opener. A Technology package is also available for the Grand Touring trim level, but the rain-sensing wipers are replaced with a Mazda Advanced keyless entry system.

Under the Hood
Mazda offers a choice between two different SkyActiv 4-cylinder engines for the 2014 CX-5. SkyActiv refers to an engineering philosophy that blends fuel-efficient powertrains with light vehicle weight and entertaining driving dynamics.

The CX-5 Sport is equipped with the same direct-injection, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that was standard in all versions of this crossover SUV last year. It makes 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 150 lb.-ft. at 4,000 rpm. A 6-speed manual transmission powers the front wheels; a 6-speed automatic is optional, and is required to get the optional AWD system.

For 2014, the CX-5 Touring and Grand Touring trim levels are equipped with a new direct-injection, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that is shared with the redesigned Mazda 6 sedan. This engine generates 184 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 185 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,250 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard, with AWD optional.

Fuel Economy
Mazda CX-5 Sport fuel-economy ratings range from 25 mpg in the city with the automatic transmission and AWD to 35 mpg on the highway with the 6-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive (FWD). The Touring and Grand Touring are rated to return between 24 mpg in the city with AWD and 32 mpg on the highway with FWD.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Based on crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Mazda CX-5 may be considered a safe SUV. The NHTSA gives the crossover a 5-star overall rating, the highest possible. The IIHS calls the CX-5 a "Top Safety Pick," but notes that in the difficult new small overlap frontal-impact test, the SUV performs at a "Marginal" level.

All versions of the 2014 CX-5, except the Sport without the Bluetooth Audio package, are equipped with hands-free calling and texting, and an E911 automatic emergency notification designed to alert authorities when the vehicle's air bags deploy. Touring models add a blind-spot monitoring system, and Grand Touring models include rain-sensing wipers.

The CX-5 Touring and Grand Touring are offered with an adaptive front-lighting system and new Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) technology. The SCBS operates at speeds between 3 and 19 mph, and uses a laser sensor mounted to the windshield to detect obstacles ahead. When the threat of a collision is present, the system prepares the brakes for quicker response, and can brake automatically if the driver fails to respond.
