Overview

What's New for 2013:

  • CX-5 small crossover SUV replaces the Tribute in Mazda's lineup
  • First Mazda with full suite of new SkyActiv fuel-efficiency technologies
  • First Mazda equipped with new "Kodo" styling themes

Exterior Features
With the 2013 CX-5, Mazda introduces its new "Kodo" design theme, which will find its way to all future Mazdas. According to Mazda, "Kodo" translates to "Soul of Motion."

Interior Features
Due to what Mazda says is the longest wheelbase in the compact crossover SUV segment, the 2013 CX-5 is equipped with what the company claims is generous rear-seat passenger room and cargo space. The 2013 CX-5 can carry 34.1 cubic feet of cargo behind the standard 60/40-split folding rear seat or, with the rear seat folded, a total of 64.8 cubic feet. A more flexible 40/20/40-split folding rear seat is standard on the CX-5 Touring and CX-5 Grand Touring trim levels.

Optional Features
Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trim levels provide a stair-step approach to standard and optional equipment. The Sport trim is available with an automatic transmission, Bluetooth with streaming audio, and a navigation system. The Touring trim can be upgraded with navigation, Bose premium sound system, power moonroof, and active bi-xenon headlights. Leather seats, automatic climate control, 19-inch alloy wheels, and Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry can be added to the CX-5 Grand Touring.

Under the Hood
Every 2013 Mazda CX-5 is equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine featuring direct fuel injection and SkyActiv fuel-saving technology, which generates 155 horsepower in a crossover SUV weighing just over 3,200 pounds. The Sport trim is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission driving the front wheels (FWD). A 6-speed automatic is optional on the CX-5 Sport, and standard on Touring and Grand Touring. Any CX-5 equipped with an automatic transmission can also be optioned with all-wheel drive (AWD).

Fuel Economy
Mazda's SkyActiv engineering philosophy emphasizes lightweight construction and fuel-efficient engines, and the new CX-5 is the first Mazda designed to these standards from the ground up. EPA fuel-economy estimates are:
  • CX-5 FWD with manual transmission: 26/35/29 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • CX-5 FWD with automatic transmission: 26/32/29 mpg
  • CX-5 AWD (automatic transmission only): 25/31/28 mpg

Safety
The new 2013 Mazda CX-5 is equipped with 6 air bags, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, traction and stability control, and hill-start assist. Safety-related options include a reversing camera and a blind-spot monitoring system.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not crash-tested the new CX-5 as this overview is written. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2013 Mazda CX-5 a "Top Safety Pick" designation due to top ratings in frontal-, side-, and rear-impact crash tests, combined with the best possible rating for roof crush strength.
