Overview

What's New
Based on the aged Ford Ranger, the Mazda B-Series is a compact pickup truck that is very little changed for the 2007 model year, gaining only a new and standard tire-pressure-monitoring system and two new exterior colors-Pueblo Gold and Vista Blue.

Overview
While other compact pickup trucks have been modernized and grown much larger in recent years, the Mazda B-Series pickup-like it's almost identical cousin, the Ford Ranger-carries on with little change. Mazda calls it "rough and rugged"-others might call it outdated. Regardless, B-Series and Ranger sales show there continues to be a market for a relatively inexpensive and compact pickup truck.

For 2007, the Mazda B-Series continues to be available in two body styles-2-door regular cab and 4-door Cab Plus-and offers three powertrain choices, with a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine, a 3.0-liter V-6, and a 4.0-liter V-6 being available. The B-Series is available in two- (rear) or four-wheel drive; 5-speed manual and automatic transmissions are available. The 4-cylinder engine in the B2300 pumps out 143 hp, the smaller V-6 in the B3000 provides 154 hp, while the larger V-6 offers 207 hp for the B4000. All 4x4 versions offer a low range and automatic-locking front hubs for steep hills or low-traction conditions.

Base models are, indeed, basic, with manual (wind-up) windows and 2-speaker AM/FM radios as their audio systems. Up-level Dual Sport and SE versions come with power windows and locks, as well as an AM/FM radio with a CD player and 4 speakers.

The Competition
The Mazda B-Series competes in the Midsize Pickup segment, which consists of 11 models. Buyers in this segment look for reliability, quality, and performance, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM were the Toyota Tacoma (178,351 units sold), Chevrolet Colorado (93,876), and Ford Ranger (92,420). The Mazda B-Series sold 4,086 units in 2006, a decrease of 30.4 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Midsize Pickup segment include the Nissan Frontier, Dodge Dakota, Honda Ridgeline, Ford Explorer Sport Trac, and GMC Canyon.
