  • Optional THX II Certified car audio system
  • New Ultimate package includes chrome wheels, voice-activated navigation, THX, power moonroof, Xenon headlights
Overview
The 4-door, 5-passenger, Lincoln MKZ luxury sedan rides on the same platform as the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan. The MKZ features 3 feet of rear-passenger leg room, along with a trunk that has nearly 16 cubic feet of cargo volume. The rear seats also split/fold 60/40 for even more cargo capacity.

For 2009, the MKZ is mostly carryover, but does offer some new items, including an optional THX II Certified audio system and an Ultimage package, which bundles several appearance, technology and convenience features.

Model Lineup
For 2009, the Lincoln MKZ is available in either front- or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD). Standard features on both models include intermittent, speed-sensitive windshield wipers; dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control; auto on/off delay headlamp controls; cruise control; overhead console with map lights and sunglasses holder; front center console with adjustable armrest and 2-tier storage; keyless entry; universal garage door opener; auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass; power-adjustable dual power heated exterior mirrors with security lamps; power door locks and remote trunk release; power windows with one-touch driver's side; manual tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with redundant audio and cruise controls; 10-way power heated/cooled driver and front passenger seat with power lumbar; perforated leather-trimmed seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; genuine wood appliqus; rear-seat reading lights; and 17-inch, 8-spoke machined-aluminum wheels.

Options for the 2009 Lincoln MKZ include a voice-activated, DVD-based navigation system; power moonroof; THX premium sound system; high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlamps; 17-inch, 8-spoke chromed-aluminum wheels; remote start; White Platinum tri-coat paint; and all-weather floor mats. Optional equipment packages include: Satin Nickel Aluminum (with instrument panel and door trim, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel replacing the wood-insert steering wheel); new-for-2009 Ultimate (with 17-inch chrome wheels; THX II Certified premium sound system; voice-activated, DVD-based navigation system; HID headlamps; and a power moonroof); and Midnight Black Special Edition (maple appliqus, maple-accented steering wheel and front/rear door trim, combination Black/Sand interior, and dark charcoal premium leather seats).

Powertrain
A single engine choice is available for the 2009 Lincoln MKZ: a 3.5-liter dual-overhead-cam (DOHC) V-6 that delivers 263 hp at 6250 rpm and 249 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. The engine is matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. EPA fuel economy is estimated at 18 mpg city/28 mpg highway for the FWD model, and 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway for the AWD version. Standard on both models is Ford's AdvanceTrac electronic stability control, traction control, and 4-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking system (ABS).

Safety
Lincoln includes a lengthy list of standard safety features on the 2009 MKZ. Standard are dual-stage front air bags and side-impact air bags for the driver and front passenger, side curtain air bags at all rows, seat belt pre-tensioners, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system. AdvanceTrac electronic stability control, traction control, ABS, a reverse sensing system and remote keyless entry are also standard.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2009 Lincoln MKZ has a 5-star rating for the driver and front-seat passenger in a frontal impact and a 5-star rating for the front seats and a 4-star rating for the rear row in side-impact testing. In the agency's rollover testing, the FWD MKZ receives 4 stars, while the AWD model earns a 5-star rating. Although 2009 results are not yet available, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2008 MKZ its top rating of "Good" for its offset crash test.

Technology
The 2009 Lincoln MKZ has standard Sync voice-activated technology for hands-free cell phone and MP3 usage, integrating the audio system, Bluetooth technology and USB connectivity. Sync's in-car communications and entertainment system was developed in collaboration with Microsoft. The standard audio system is an AM/FM 6-disc in-dash CD/MP3 player with 6 speakers. A voice-activated DVD-based navigation system is available, as is a THX II Certified car audio system. Sirius satellite radio is standard as well.
