What Changed for 2009:
- Memory feature for front-passenger seat
The fourth-generation Lexus LS launched in 2006
. As the flagship of the Lexus
brand, the 2009 LS models traditionally represent the zenith of luxury, technology and safety engineering in a large 4-door sedan, according to Lexus.
A best-seller since its introduction in 1990, the Lexus LS enjoys accolades for quality, reliability, technology, safety and comfort. In addition to the short- and long-wheelbase models, the fourth-generation LS is the first to be offered with a hybrid powerplant and full-time all-wheel drive (AWD).Model Lineup
There are three different Lexus LS models for 2009, each offering a comprehensive list of standard luxury and safety features. The LS 460 is the base sedan, with the standard wheelbase and chassis length, on a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) platform. The LS 460 L is built on a platform with a wheelbase stretch of 4.8 inches, and an overall length increased by the same amount. It shares the same engine, transmission and RWD drivetrain as the standard sedan. Options for the LS 460 include an upgraded Mark Levinson stereo, Luxury package, Touring package, and Intuitive Park Assist (IPA). The LS 460 L offers the Executive Class Seating package-converting the interior to 4-person seating (including rear seats that recline and a DVD entertainment package). Also available on the LS 460 L is the Air Suspension package, which includes 19-inch wheels, larger tires, variable gear-ratio steering, and an adaptive variable air suspension.
The hybrid LS 600h L is only offered on the stretched chassis shared with the LS 460 L. It offers a unique gasoline/electric powerplant with a special transmission and a full-time AWD powertrain. The LS 600h L offers many of the LS 460 options as standard equipment, but the ultra-luxury sedan may still be individually tailored with the optional Premium packages, the Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and the Executive Class Seating package.Powertrain
Traditional, smooth and strong V-8 power has been the standard for the Lexus LS from its inception, and the 2009 model is no exception. The LS 460 and LS 460 L share a powerful 4.6-liter V-8 engine that develops 380 hp and 367 lb.-ft. of torque while returning EPA-estimated mileage figures of 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway. An 8-speed, sequential-shift automatic transmission routes power to the rear wheels.
The hybrid LS 600h L is equipped with both a 5.0-liter V-8 engine and a high-output electric-drive motor. Combined, the engine and motor generate 438 hp under the hood of the Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV). The EPA mileage rating for the hybrid is 20 mpg city/22 mpg highway. Unique to the hybrid is the electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT) connected to the full-time AWD system.Safety
A comprehensive list of safety features is standard on all 2009 Lexus LS models. These include multiple air bags, traction and stability control, and an available Pre-Collision System (PCS) that prepares the vehicle and its occupants in the event of a collision.
As of this writing, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA
) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS
) have crash tested the 2009 Lexus LS.Technology
All versions of the 2009 Lexus LS are available with an Advanced Parking Guidance System. Utilizing sensors in the bumpers and the backup camera on the rear of the vehicle, onboard computers process the angles needed to park the vehicle. Once the system is activated by the driver, it operates in a completely hands-free manner (the driver is still responsible for braking). The LS is also available with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, a millimeter-wave radar-based system designed to maintain a pre-set distance behind the vehicle in front. Unique to the LS 600h L are the advanced Light-Emitting Diode (LED) headlamps, designed to illuminate faster and last longer than other automotive headlamps.
