Introduction
The 2014 Lexus IS is an entry-level luxury sport sedan offered with a choice between two V-6 engines and rear-wheel or all-wheel drive (RWD or AWD). It is designed to compete with the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS, Infiniti Q50, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Models and Features
Lexus sells the new 2014 IS as the IS 250 and the IS 350, each in standard or F Sport trim, and each with RWD or AWD. Select the IS 350 and, in addition to a more powerful V-6 engine, the car includes an 8-speed automatic transmission and larger brakes. Versions equipped with AWD have standard heated front seats.

Choose the IS 250 or IS 350 with F Sport trim and the car includes unique 18-inch aluminum wheels with more aggressive tires, upgraded brake pads, sport-tuned Adaptive Variable suspension, and a Sport+ driving mode for the Drive Mode Select system. Exterior styling is modified to set the car apart from standard versions, and features LED headlights. Inside, the F Sport has silver cabin trim, aluminum pedals, black headliner, perforated leather wrapped around the steering wheel and shift knob, and unique instrumentation that the automaker says is inspired by the Lexus LFA supercar. The driver and front passenger sit on sport-bolstered, heated front seats.

Options and Packages
Lexus bundles options for the IS into packages that can vary by trim level and geographic region.

In addition to the F Sport equipment items, the IS can be fitted with a navigation system, Lexus Enform telematics and smartphone application technology, and an enhanced Bluetooth system. Leather seats are also optional, along with heated and ventilated front seats, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, memory for the driver's settings, and upgraded interior trim.

Additionally, the IS is offered with larger wheels, LED headlights, a color information display in the instrument cluster, cargo net, and a carpeted trunk mat. Several safety-related extras are also available, such as rain-sensing wipers, a reversing camera, blind-spot monitor system, rear cross-traffic alert system, and park-assist sensors. Exclusive upgrades for the IS 350 includes a Mark Levinson premium surround-sound audio system, power rear window sunshade, and a pre-collision system with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

Because the IS 250 AWD and IS 350 AWD models are popular in colder climates where rain, sleet and snow frequently fall, they can be fitted with headlight washers, a heated steering wheel, wiper de-icing system, water-repellant front window glass, and a high-intensity cabin heater.

Under the Hood
The Lexus IS 250 is equipped with a 2.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 204 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 185 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is standard, driving the car's rear wheels. An AWD system is optional.

The Lexus IS 350 includes a 3.5-liter V-6 engine generating 306 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 277 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm. A new 8-speed automatic transmission is standard with RWD, while the optional AWD system employs a 6-speed automatic. Both transmissions include paddle shifters.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the Lexus IS 250 gets a minimum of 20 mpg in the city and a maximum of 30 mpg on the highway, depending on whether it has rear-drive or AWD. The estimates for the Lexus IS 350 range from 19 mpg in the city to 28 mpg on the highway. All Lexus IS models require premium gas.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Lexus IS receives an overall rating of 5 stars, the highest possible score. As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not performed crash tests on the new IS.

Any version of the new Lexus IS can be optioned with a reversing camera, park-assist sensors, a blind-spot monitoring system, and a rear cross-traffic alert system. A pre-collision system with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is offered for the IS 350.
