For 2006, a new longer, wider, and roomier Lexus IS sedan arrives, replete with a revamped family of high-output V-6 engines and a choice of manual or automatic six-speed transmissions. Rear- or all-wheel drive is available on the IS 250. Other changes include a new body structure, a new suspension system, electric power steering, more powerful brakes and, on the IS 350, a sport-oriented Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system.
The IS Series was first launched in June 2000 as a 2001 model. Today, three models form the basis of the IS family. The IS 250 features a 204-hp, 2.5L V-6 engine with either a six-speed manual or a new six-speed sequential automatic transmission (with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters) routing power to the rear wheels.
The IS 250 is also available with all-wheel drive and a six-speed sequential automatic. The top-line IS 350 is powered by a 306-hp, 3.5L V-6, backed by a six-speed sequential autobox. Safety features include front/front-knee/front-side/side curtain air bags, traction control, vehicle stability control (IS 250), Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (IS 350), and daytime running lamps. Standard equipment includes the SmartAccess keyless entry and engine start system, a six-disc in-dash CD changer, and a 13-speaker premium audio system.
Several option packages are available: The Premium Package includes leather trim, 10-way power seats, and rear arm-rest storage. The Premium Plus Package adds heated and ventilated seats, perforated leather trim, electrochromatic mirrors with memory and reverse-tilt function, 18-inch wheels, a sport suspension, aluminum pedals, metal scuff plates, High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps, and rain-sensing wipers. All-wheel-drive models also receive wood trim. Other optional equipment includes a Mark Levinson audio system with navigation (which includes voice activation, rear backup camera, and Bluetooth technology); Park Assist; the Pre-Collision safety system; and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (when equipped with the automatic transmission); headlamp washers; one-touch open/close moonroof; and 18-inch wheels with summer tires. Dealer-installed accessories include a high-performance exhaust system, different 18-inch wheels, a full body kit, and a rear spoiler.
