Overview
Lexus launched its third SUV, the GX 470, in 2002. Slotted between the RX and LX in terms of size, the GX is a large vehicle that seats up to 8 occupants and draws its power from a V-8 engine. It includes typical Lexus luxury: heated leather seats, premium audio, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power moonroof, and much more. For 2008, the Lexus GX features a host of minor improvements, but is otherwise carryover from 2007.

Model Lineup
The Lexus GX 470 5-passenger luxury SUV seats 8 with optional third-row seating, and features full-time 4-wheel drive (4WD). Standard features include a power moonroof; 17-inch, 5-spoke alloy wheels and full-size spare tire; heated outside mirrors; 4-beam projector headlamps with integrated foglamps; rain-sensing wipers and water-repellent glass front windows; and a tow hitch receiver.

An optional Sport package includes a dynamic suspension system, chrome exhaust tips, graphite-finish roof rack, dark tinted backup lens, black maple interior wood trim, and black carpeting/carpeted floor mats. The optional navigation system/Mark Levinson audio system package includes a voice-activated DVD navigation system with backup camera and Bluetooth technology, as well as a 14-speaker, 240-watt Mark Levinson premium audio system with auto sound leveler and in-dash single-feed 6-disc DVD/CD auto changer.

Other options on the 2008 Lexus GX 470 include a DVD rear-seat entertainment system; roof rack attachments for bike or ski/snowboard; 17-inch, 6-spoke alloy wheels; rear spoiler; third-row seating with air conditioning; full towing equipment packages; car cover; wheel locks; and XM satellite radio.

Powertrain
The full-time 4WD Lexus GX is powered by a 4.7-liter V-8 engine with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) that produces 263 hp at 5400 rpm and 323 lb.-ft. of torque at 3400 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. A limited-slip differential with manual-locking feature is standard. Stability and traction control are also standard, as are 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS and electronic suspension. A dynamic suspension system and rear adjustable air suspension with height control and automatic load leveling are optional. EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2008 Lexus GX 470 are 14 mpg city/18 mpg highway, classifying the engine as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle II (ULEV II).

Safety
The 2008 Lexus GX includes dual-stage frontal air bags for driver and front passenger, and front-seat-mounted side air bags with occupant sensor. The first- and second-row seating positions have roll-sensing curtain air bags. Other safety features include 3-point seat belts with front pre-tensioners and force limiters; child seat anchors; side-impact door beams; tire-pressure-monitoring system; daytime running lights; theft-deterrent system; and mud-and-snow-rated tires. Stability and traction control, 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS and brake assist, downhill assist and hill-start assist controls are also standard. The optional Lexus Link system connects to a call center in emergency situations, dispatching help when necessary. The 2008 Lexus GX has not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Technology
The 2008 Lexus GX can be equipped with an optional dynamic suspension system, and features as standard equipment a voice-activated DVD-based navigation system; Mark Levinson premium audio system with 14 speakers, auto sound leveler and in-dash single-feed 6-disc DVD/CD auto-changer; available XM satellite radio; and Lexus Link.
