Overview

The Lexus GX is a mid-size sport utility vehicle that debuted for the 2003 model year. More rugged than the car-based RX models, the GX shared its truck platform with the Toyota 4Runner and FJ Cruiser, although the Lexus offered much softer suspension tuning. In 2010, Lexus introduced a second-generation model that was completely redesigned. It again was built on a truck frame shared with its Toyota siblings. New just last year, the 2011 model is a carryover.

The eight-passenger GX is offered in two trim levels: GX 460 and GX 460 Premium. The standard model arrives with a long list of luxury equipment, including leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, eight-way power front seats with heating and ventilation, power-folding third-row seats, running boards, moonroof, rain-sensing wipers, reverse camera, nine-speaker audio system, and more.

The Premium model builds on that equipment by adding adaptive suspension, adjustable ride height control, auto-dimming side mirrors, adaptive xenon headlamps, upgraded leather upholstery, additional chrome trim, heated and wood-trimmed steering wheel, second row air conditioning, and second row heated seats. The options list includes parking sensors, side cameras, power-folding exterior mirrors, navigation system, 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound audio system, lane-departure warning, and a driver attention system.

The Lexus GX is offered with one engine choice, a 4.6-liter, six-cylinder engine that's rated at 301 horsepower. The standard transmission is a six-speed automatic that sends power to all four wheels through a permanent all-wheel drive system. The GX 460 is fitted with a dual-range transfer case, meaning it has lower gearing for off-road use when needed. When properly equipped, the GX 460 can tow 6,500 pounds. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Lexus GX 460 between 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, depending on powertrain.

The 2011 Lexus GX460 starts with a base price of about $53,000.
