What's New for 2013:

  • Redesigned for 2013
  • ES 300h hybrid model debuts
  • Roomier, especially in the back seat
  • New infotainment and safety technology

Exterior Features
Lexus offers the redesigned ES in familiar ES 350 guise, and is introducing the new ES 300h hybrid model for 2013. Both feature the new Lexus spindle grille design, LED running lights, LED taillights, and 17-inch aluminum wheels with low-rolling-resistance tires. The trunk holds 15.2 cubic feet of cargo.

Interior Features
Lexus says the new ES has a roomier interior, especially for rear-seat passengers. NuLuxe synthetic leather seating, which Lexus says is environmentally friendly, is standard. The new ES also comes with a 10-way power driver's seat, power sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, and Smart Access keyless entry with push-button start. Optitron gauges are also included, along with USB/iPod connectivity and a 90-day subscription to satellite radio.

Optional Features
Lexus offers numerous options for the new 2013 ES, either packaged with other items or individually. Highlights include standard-grade or semi-aniline leather, climate controlled front seats, heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, power rear sunshade, Intuitive Parking Assist, and 18-inch aluminum wheels.

A hard-drive navigation system with Lexus Enform App Suite smartphone connectivity is available, as well as a Display Audio system with a color touch screen, HD Radio, iTunes tagging, and Bluetooth streaming. A Mark Levinson premium audio system with GreenEdge speakers can also be installed in any ES, while Bamboo wood trim is offered exclusively for the ES 300h.

Under the Hood
The 2013 Lexus ES 350 has a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that generates 268 horsepower, delivered to the front wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission. Lexus claims that the ES 350 will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds.

ES 300h models have an Atkinson-cycle, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric assist motor, nickel-metal hydride battery pack, and a continuously variable transmission. The total system provides 200 horsepower.

A standard Drive Mode control system offers Normal, Eco and, in ES 300h models, EV settings.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Lexus ES are:
  • ES 300h: 40/39/40 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • ES 350: 21/31/24 mpg

The redesigned Lexus ES includes 10 air bags, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, traction and stability control, Whiplash Injury Lessening front-seat design, Smart Stop technology, and 1 free year of Lexus Safety Connect with Automatic Collision Notification.

Safety options include park-assist sensors, rain-sensing wipers, reversing camera, blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure alert, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Pre-Collision System.

As this overview is written, the 2013 Lexus ES has not been crash tested by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
