A full-size 4-wheel-drive (4WD) luxury SUV, the Land Rover Range Rover was first introduced in 1970 and underwent extensive changes for the 2013 model year. Still, the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover offers a long list of new equipment and technological advances. The 2014 Range Rover is offered in standard, HSE, Supercharged, and Autobiography trim levels. A long-wheelbase version adds 7.3 in. to the vehicle's length, and provides greater interior refinement and space; this longer vehicle is offered in Supercharged and Autobiography trims.

Models and Features
The base 2014 Land Rover Range Rover is available in 14 exterior colors, most of which come at a surcharge. It's a 4-door vehicle with a 2-piece clamshell-style tailgate. Standard equipment includes 19-in. aluminum wheels, front and rear LED lighting, xenon headlights with power washers, rain-sensing wipers, heated wiper rest grid, and front and rear park-assist sensors. Standard interior equipment includes grained leather seats, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, triple-zone automatic climate control, and a choice between black lacquer and wood trim. Bluetooth connectivity with music streaming, 380-watt sound system with HD Radio and satellite radio, and an 8-in. in-dash touch screen with voice control and a navigation system are also standard.

The Range Rover HSE features an upgraded front grille; 20-in. alloy wheels; Oxford perforated leather seats (heated front and rear); sliding panoramic roof including power blind; auto-dimming heated power-folding exterior mirrors with approach lamps; 12-way driver and passenger front seats with driver memory; and a choice of two interior veneers. The Supercharged trim level adds a supercharged V-8 engine, terrain response is added to the 4WD system, 21-in. 10-spoke alloy wheels, stainless steel gas and brake pedals, and intelligent start/stop. The Autobiography trim level includes premium 21-in. diamond-turned alloy wheels, full semi-aniline leather seats with a wide range of color choices, an extended interior trim palette, suedecloth headliner, and a high-tech park-assist feature that includes Park Exit.

The Range Rover can carry 32.1 cu. ft. of cargo behind the rear seat, and up to 71.7 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded.

Options and Packages
According to Land Rover, "The new Range Rover can be extensively tailored with an indulgent choice of colors, finishes and special details." Many options are available at all trim levels, mostly in the form of packages. The Range Rover Autobiography is offered in a greater variety of colors than the other versions, within and without. Executive-class individual rear seating, rear cooler compartment, heated wood-and-leather steering wheel, and a 1,700-watt Meridian Signature Reference audio system are the only options for the Autobiography.

Under the Hood
The standard powertrain in the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover base and HSE trims consists of a supercharged, 3.0-liter, 340-horsepower V-6 engine that generates 332 lb.-ft. of torque and sends power to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The upper trim levels feature a 5.0-liter, 510-horsepower V-8 engine that generates 461 lb.-ft. of torque and is paired with the same 8-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system with a 2-speed transfer case.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover are 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway/19 mpg combined with the base engine. With the V-8 engine, the estimates are 13/18/15 mpg.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Every 2014 Land Rover Range Rover is equipped with 6 air bags, traction and stability control system, roll-stability control, gradient-acceleration control, and cornering brake control. Optional safety technologies include an adaptive cruise control system, including Queue Assist technology that brings the SUV to a complete stop in traffic without driver intervention. Other safety options include adaptive headlights; blind-spot monitoring; surround-view camera system with reverse traffic detection and trailer hitch guidance features; and Intelligent Emergency Braking with Advanced Emergency Brake Assist.

As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover.
