Introduction
Kia's entrant in the compact crossover SUV segment is the 2014 Kia Sportage, which benefits from several enhancements for the new model year. The 2014 Sportage competes against numerous models, including the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Patriot, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Models and Features
The 2014 Kia Sportage is sold in LX, EX, and SX trim levels, with a choice of front-wheel (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD).

Upgrading to the Sportage EX adds 18-in. aluminum wheels, automatic headlights, fog lights, turn signal indicators on heated exterior mirrors, rear spoiler, and additional chrome exterior trim. Inside, the Sportage EX includes Clean Tex seat fabric, dual-zone automatic climate control, premium sound system, and UVO eServices technology. A reversing camera and rear park-assist sensors are also standard for this trim level, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, trip computer, auto-dimming rearview mirror, universal garage door opener, and more.

The 2014 Sportage SX features a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Visually, it sets itself apart from the Sportage EX with a unique grille, high-intensity discharge headlights, LED running lights, LED taillights, and dual exhaust outlets.

Options and Packages
Factory-installed options for the 2014 Sportage are grouped into packages. The Sportage LX can be fitted with a Popular package containing UVO eServices technology, a trip computer, reversing camera, rear park-assist sensors, automatic headlights, and several cosmetic and functional upgrades.

A Premium package is offered for the Sportage EX and SX trim levels, including a navigation system, leather seats, ventilated front seats, Smart Key passive entry with push-button starting, and power-folding exterior mirrors. The Premium package for the EX also contains a panoramic sunroof, an item that is a separate option for the SX version.

In addition to these option packages, Kia dealers can install a variety of extra-cost accessories.

Under the Hood
For 2014, the Kia Sportage LX and EX receive a new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine equipped with direct fuel injection. The new engine is more powerful than last year's model, generating 182 horsepower and 177 lb.-ft. of torque, but is not as fuel-efficient as the engine it replaces.

The Sportage SX continues to offer a turbocharged, direct-injection, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine rated to create 260 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter peaking between 1,850 rpm and 3,000 rpm.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 2014 Sportage LX and EX are expected to return 19 mpg in the city with the optional AWD system and 28 mpg on the highway with standard FWD. The Sportage SX is rated to get 19 mpg in the city with AWD and 26 mpg on the highway with FWD.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the 2014 Kia Sportage with AWD receives a 5-star overall safety rating (out of 5 stars). However, the FWD model receives an overall safety rating of 4 stars, although individual test results for the two models are identical. The NHTSA offers no explanation for the discrepancy on its website.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2014 Sportage its highest rating of "Good" in four out of five assessments. In the small overlap frontal-impact test, the Sportage receives a "Poor" rating.

Aside from government-mandated safety features, plus an available reversing camera, rear park-assist sensors, and UVO eServices technology, the 2014 Sportage offers nothing in the way of contemporary safety systems. The UVO eServices system does, however, provide 911 Connect, a feature that automatically contacts an emergency services operator if one of the SUV's air bags deploys.
