Introduction
The 2014 Kia Soul is a 5-door hatchback that is commonly placed in the multi-purpose vehicle category along with models such as the Buick Encore, Ford C-Max, Fiat 500L, Nissan Cube, Nissan Juke, and Scion xB. Kia calls the 2014 Soul an "urban hatchback."

Models and Features
The 2014 Kia Soul is sold in Base, Plus, and Exclaim trim levels. Upgrading to the Soul Plus adds a more powerful engine, standard automatic transmission, larger 17-in. aluminum wheels, remote keyless entry, and LED turn signal indicators for the side mirror housings. Inside, the Soul Plus adds nicer seat fabric, a center console storage box with an armrest, rear-seat center armrest, cruise control, and a reversing camera.

On the Soul Exclaim 18-in. aluminum wheels, fog lights, projector-beam headlights, LED taillights, and power-folding side mirrors are standard. The Exclaim's interior features premium seat fabric, Piano Black trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, cooled glove box, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a 10-way power driver's seat. This trim level also includes UVO eServices technology.

Options and Packages
An automatic transmission is available for the base version of the 2014 Soul for those who prefer it to a manual transmission. Those seeking additional factory-installed upgrades can consider the Soul Plus or Soul Exclaim.

The Soul Plus is offered with an Eco package that includes an Idle Stop & Go system designed to help conserve fuel in city driving. Low-rolling-resistance tires are mounted to special 16-in. aluminum wheels when this package is ordered.

Three additional equipment packages can be added to the Soul Plus. The UVO eServices package contains that technology plus automatic headlights. The Audio package builds on this with a premium audio system and special front speaker lights that pulse with the beat of the music. A Primo package adds both of these packages plus leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, 10-way power driver's seat, panoramic sunroof, Smart Key passive entry with push-button starting, LED interior lights, and fog lights.

The Soul Exclaim is offered with many of these upgrades, but packaged differently. The Sun and Sound package combines the premium audio system and speaker lights with HD Radio, a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, and a navigation system with an 8-in. color touch-screen display. The Whole Shabang package includes these items, plus the upgrades in the Primo package, plus exclusive HID headlights, LED positioning lights, and a Supervision gauge cluster with a 4.2-in. center information display.

In addition to these features, the 2014 Soul can be outfitted with several dealer-installed upgrades including floor mats, a cargo net, interior lighting kit, and more.

Under the Hood
The base version of the 2014 Soul is equipped with a 130-horsepower, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 6-speed automatic transmission. The Soul Plus and Soul Exclaim have a 164-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine equipped with the automatic transmission. All Souls are front-wheel drive.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 2014 Soul with the smaller 1.6-liter engine is rated to return 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, regardless of transmission choice. The Soul Plus and Exclaim are expected to get 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

The Soul Plus model can be optioned with an Eco package that adds an Idle Stop & Go system to the 2.0-liter engine. So equipped, the Soul is rated to get 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Soul earns a 5-star (out of 5 stars) overall rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2014 Soul its highest rating of "Good" in all crash-test assessments, but as this overview is written the new Soul has not been subjected to the small overlap frontal-impact test.
