The 2014 Kia Sorento is a crossover SUV with 5-passenger seating capacity. A third-row seat is optional, and Kia offers a range of trim levels and option packages to help the Sorento meet a spectrum of buyer budgets and equipment requirements. The 2014 Sorento competes against numerous midsize crossover SUVs, but is most closely aligned with the Dodge Journey, Ford Edge, GMC Terrain, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Murano, and Subaru Outback.

Models and Features
The 2014 Kia Sorento lineup includes LX, EX, SX, and SX Limited trim levels. A 4-cylinder engine is standard for the LX trim level, with a V-6 engine optional.

The Sorento EX includes the V-6 engine plus larger 18-inch aluminum wheels, automatic headlights, LED running lights, fog lights, roof rails, and a rear spoiler. Interior upgrades include leather seats, power driver's seat, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, sun shades for the second row of seats, and upgraded gauges and interior lighting. The Sorento EX also includes UVO eServices technology, Smart Key passive entry with push-button starting, auto-dimming rearview mirror with universal garage door opener, rear park-assist sensors, reversing camera, and a blind-spot monitoring system.

Buy the Sorento SX, and 19-inch machined-finish wheels are included. This version is also upgraded with power-folding side mirrors, power tailgate, and LED taillights. Nicer exterior and interior trim is included for the Sorento SX, as well as a premium audio system, navigation system, panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, rear air conditioning, 115-volt power inverter, and more. Kia's new Flex Steer electric steering is standard for this trim level as well.

At the top of the lineup, the Sorento SX Limited is equipped with chrome wheels, xenon headlights, premium Nappa leather, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Options and Packages
Numerous option packages are offered for the 2014 Kia Sorento, and all versions can be outfitted with a third-row seat for 7-passenger capacity. The Sorento LX is offered with stair-step upgrades in the form of Convenience, Premium, and Touring packages, which essentially serve to pair the features offered for the EX and SX trim levels with the LX's standard 4-cylinder engine. A Touring package is also offered for the Sorento EX, adding most of the features that come standard on the Sorento SX.

Under the Hood
This year, the 2014 Sorento LX is equipped with a standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine featuring direct fuel injection. Last year, this engine was an option. The 4-cylinder produces 191 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 181 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm, and a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic manual shifting delivers power to the crossover SUV's front wheels.

Optional for the Sorento LX and standard for all other 2014 Sorentos, a new 3.3-liter V-6 engine generates 290 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 252 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,200 rpm. It, too, is paired with the Sportmatic transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD).

A full-time Torque on Demand AWD system with a locking center differential and Torque Vectoring Cornering Control is optional with both engines and for all Sorento trim levels.

Fuel Economy
Between its two engines and two drivetrains, the 2014 Kia Sorento's fuel-economy ratings range between 18 mpg in the city for the V-6 engine and AWD to 26 mpg on the highway with the 4-cylinder engine and FWD. In combined driving, the ranges are 20-22 mpg, indicating a small penalty for choosing the more powerful V-6 engine or the AWD system.

Safety Ratings and Technology
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests for the 2014 Kia Sorento.

Under the SUV's sheetmetal, the body structure is stiffer than last year, and all versions of the 2014 Sorento except for the LX model have rear park-assist sensors, a reversing camera, blind-spot monitoring system, and UVO eServices. UVO eServices is a smartphone-pairing technology providing 911 Assist service and a Crash Notification Notice function that automatically contacts authorities in the event of an air bag deployment. Additionally, Sorento owners can program speed limits, curfew limits, and geo-fenced boundary limits, and the system will send an alert whenever they are exceeded.

Another new feature for 2014 is Flex Steer electric steering, which is standard for the SX and SX Limited trim levels. Flex Steer allows the driver to choose between Comfort, Normal, and Sport steering modes, which calibrate effort levels and "feel" accordingly.
