Introduction
The front-wheel-drive (FWD) 2014 Kia Rio is a 5-passenger compact car available in sedan and 5-door hatchback body styles. Buyers have their choice of LX, EX, and SX trim levels, all powered by an efficient 4-cylinder engine. As is the case with all 2014 Kias, the Rio and Rio 5-door are covered by the company's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Competitors include the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Mazda 2, Nissan Versa, and the Toyota Yaris.

Models and Features
Base versions of the 2014 Kia Rio carry the LX badge and are equipped with 15-in. steel wheels, heated power outside mirrors, 4-speaker audio system with satellite radio and a USB jack, height-adjustable driver's seat, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. Covering the middle of the lineup is the Rio EX, upgraded with added chrome trim, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, power windows and door locks, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and premium cloth upholstery. Positioned one rung above the EX is the sporty 2014 Rio SX, which is made distinct courtesy of its retuned suspension, 17-in. alloy wheels, power-folding turn signal mirrors, fog lights, LED front accent and taillights, dual exhaust tips, and extra amenities like a rearview camera, infotainment system, leather trim, and aluminum foot pedals.

Options and Packages
Shoppers who want a Rio LX with a few more creature comforts will want to consider the available Power package, within which Kia has bundled power windows and door locks, as well as keyless entry. For the Rio EX, the company offers an Eco package featuring an auto start/stop system, and a Convenience package comprised of alloy wheels, infotainment system, rearview camera, automatic headlights, power-folding turn signal mirrors, soft-touch dash, and more. A Premium package is reserved exclusively for the 2014 Kia Rio SX and ups the ante with a navigation system, push-button start, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power tilt/slide moonroof.

Under the Hood
Regardless of whether you're considering the 4-door Rio sedan or the Rio 5-door hatchback, the engine will be the same. For 2014, it's a direct-injection, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder unit that produces 138 horsepower and 123 lb.-ft. of torque, output that's channeled to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission (LX only) or a 6-speed automatic with eco mode.

Fuel Economy
While the 2014 Rio's 4-cylinder engine may not boast eye-popping levels of power, it does provide a respectable level of efficiency. According to the EPA, regardless of which transmission is selected, Kia's smallest model will average 27 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway, and 31 mpg in mixed driving.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Kia Rio received an overall rating of 4 (out of 5) stars. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Rio models received a "Marginal" rating for small overlap front-impact protection.

Standard safety equipment on all versions of the 2014 Kia Rio includes 6 air bags, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, and hill-start assist.
