Introduction
The 2014 Kia Optima is a midsize family sedan that competes within one of the most hotly contested segments of the automotive marketplace. Rivals include the Buick Regal, Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Dodge Avenger, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat.

Models and Features
Kia offers the 2014 Optima in LX, EX, SX, SX Turbo, and Limited trim levels. A Kia Optima Hybrid is also available, in LX or EX trim, but as this overview is written, the 2013 models are still on sale and Kia has not announced changes for 2014.

Choose the Optima EX and the sedan is equipped with larger 17-in. aluminum wheels, leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and Smart Key passive entry with push-button starting. A 10-way power driver's seat and floor mats are also standard, along with an auto-dimming rearview mirror, universal garage door opener, interior mood lighting, and upgraded interior trim.

The Optima SX is the sporty version, equipped with subtle styling changes, LED exterior lighting, and machined-finish 18-inch aluminum wheels. Inside, the SX gains paddle shifters, metallic and simulated carbon fiber trim, and upgraded Supervision gauges. Add the turbocharged engine and the SX Turbo also includes HID headlights and Kia's new Drive Mode Select system that allows the driver to choose transmission shift style and steering calibration.

At the top of the Optima lineup, the Limited trim level adds extra chrome trim, chrome wheels, LED fog lights, red-painted brake calipers, and power-folding exterior mirrors. A panoramic sunroof is standard for this trim level, along with premium leather, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. An 8-in. touch-screen infotainment system with navigation, UVO eServices, and a premium sound system with HD Radio is installed in the Optima Limited's dashboard, and this version is equipped with a blind-spot detection system with rear cross-traffic alert and rear park-assist sensors.

Options and Packages
Each version of the 2014 Kia Optima can be optioned with features that are available on the next most expensive version of the car. Additionally, Kia dealers can install a variety of extra-cost accessories upon customer request.

Under the Hood
Standard for the Optima LX, EX, and SX, a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine is rated to make 192 horsepower. In the SX Turbo and Limited, a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine generates 274 horsepower. Perhaps more importantly, the turbocharged engine also delivers 269 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,650 rpm and 4,500 rpm.

Regardless of engine choice, a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic manual shifting is standard, delivering the power to the front wheels.

Fuel Economy
Stick with the standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and the 2014 Optima model's EPA fuel-economy ratings are 23 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg in combined driving. The Optima SX Turbo and Limited versions are EPA-rated to return 20 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg in combined driving.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Optima received an overall rating of 5 stars (out of 5 stars). Note, however, that in the side-impact test, driver protection was 3 stars.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Optima is a "Top Safety Pick," thanks to its "Acceptable" rating in the small overlap frontal-impact crash-test. In 2014, fewer models qualify for the "Top Safety Pick" rating due to changes in IIHS award requirements.

For 2014, the Kia Optima also gains new safety-related features. A new blind-spot detection system includes rear cross-traffic detection and rear park-assist sensors, and is available for all trim levels except the base Optima LX. A reversing camera is available for all 2014 Optimas.

All 2014 Kia Optimas offer UVO eServices, with the technology standard on the Optima Limited. Among its numerous features, this system can automatically dial 9-1-1 to put vehicle occupants in touch with an emergency operator following an air bag deployment. As long as a smartphone is actively paired to the system, this feature will work. Kia does not charge subscription fees for its UVO eServices technology.
