Overview

What's New for 2013:

  • Redesigned Kia badges
  • New SX Limited luxury performance trim
  • New Remington Red paint color
  • Manual transmission no longer offered
  • EX Turbo model not offered

Exterior Features
Kia has both simplified and expanded the Optima lineup for 2013. The less expensive LX and EX trims now share a single powertrain, while the SX and new luxury-oriented SX Limited (SXL) have a turbocharged engine. The Optima is also available as a Hybrid model. Aluminum wheels and power mirrors are standard.

Interior Features
The Optima LX is equipped with Clean Tex cloth seats, power driver's seat, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, air conditioning, Bluetooth, USB port, auxiliary audio input jack, and a trip computer.

Optional Features
The Optima Hybrid is similar to the Optima LX, but adds keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, unique gauges, and unique design and trim details. Upgrading to the Optima EX adds leather, while the Optima SX includes HID headlights, LED taillights, paddle shifters, Supervision gauges, and a sport suspension. The Optima SXL is equipped with chrome wheels, red-painted brake calipers, LED forward running lights, navigation system, reversing camera, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and premium Nappa leather.

Each Optima can be upgraded with extras from the next entry on the trim-level ladder. Additional extras include a premium Infinity sound system, panoramic sunroof, Microsoft UVO smartphone connectivity, and more.

Under the Hood
The Optima LX and EX are equipped with a direct-injected, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 200 horsepower. The Optima SX and SXL have a direct-injected, turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 274 horsepower. Moreover, this engine's 269 lb.-ft. of torque is available from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm.

Optima Hybrid models pair a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with an electric assist motor and a Lithium polymer battery to generate a combined 206 horsepower. Top speed using just the battery pack is 62 mph, according to Kia.

In all Optima models, a 6-speed Sportmatic automatic transmission drives the front wheels. An Active Eco system is also standard, letting the driver know when he or she is maximizing fuel economy via an indicator light in the gauge cluster.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Kia Optima are:
  • Optima LX and EX: 24/35/28 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • Optima SX and SXL: 22/34/26 mpg
  • Optima Hybrid: 35/40/37 mpg

Safety
Every 2013 Optima is equipped with 6 air bags, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, and a traction and stability control system. A reversing camera is available as an option.

In impact tests, the 2013 Optima received a 5-star (out of 5) overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
