Overview

The 2011 Kia Optima is a midsize front-wheel-drive sedan that's available with a conventional or hybrid power plant. It has been entirely redesigned for this model year, based on the new Hyundai Sonata platform.

The 2011 Kia Optima is available in five trims: LX, EX, EX Turbo, SX, and Hybrid. The base Optima LX features 16-inch wheels, air conditioning, power accessories, and a sound system that includes satellite radio, a CD/MP3 player, and USB input. Other trims gradually add features, topping out with the Optima SX, which boasts a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, Xenon headlights, and many other upgrades. The Optima Hybrid is basically the EX trim, only with cloth instead of leather upholstery, in addition to the hybrid powertrain. Various option packages can add a navigation system, upgraded sound system, more power features, and dual-zone climate control.

The standard power plant in the 2011 Kia Optima LX and EX-a 200-horsepower, 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine-is linked to a 6-speed manual transmission on the LX Manual and a 6-speed automatic on others. It delivers 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The Optima EX Turbo and the SX employ a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 274 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque, and delivers 22 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. The Kia Optima Hybrid features a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, which together generate 206 horsepower and deliver 35 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Kia Optima include anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, front side air bags, side curtain air bags, and hill-start assist. In government crash tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Optima 5 (out of 5) stars for front- and side-impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it highest-possible "Good" ratings in front- and side-impact crash tests.

Starting MSRP for the 2011 Kia Optima was $19,200.
