The Patriot is an all-new model for 2007 and is Jeep's least-expensive offering. Like the Jeep Compass and the Dodge Nitro, the Patriot is built on a car-style chassis.
The Jeep Patriot is a compact, 5-occupant crossover utility vehicle and a fraternal twin to the also-new Jeep Compass. On the outside, it looks like a scaled-down Grand Cherokee . Like the Compass, it features front- or 4-wheel drive (4WD) and is available with either part-time 4WD capability called Freedom Drive or, unlike the Compass, it also is available with Freedom Drive II, a full-time 4WD system with a low range and what Jeep calls "Trail Rated" off-road capability.
Standard equipment on the Patriot includes side curtain air bags, electronic stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, a 60/40 split and folding rear seat, and a vinyl cargo floor that can be removed and washed. Available equipment includes a 115-volt power outlet, self-recharging removable interior cargo lamps, a navigation system, a Boston Acoustics premium audio system, a sliding center armrest, YES Essentials stain- and odor-resistant cloth seat fabric, and heated cloth or leather seats. Power comes from a 172-hp, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and is transferred through a 5-speed manual or continuously-variable automatic transmission.
The Jeep Patriot competes in the Compact Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) segment, which consists of 20 models. Buyers in this segment look for fuel economy, reliability, and comfort, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM
