Overview
When Jeep introduced the Liberty in 2002, it was the intermediate representative in a three-model lineup. Now, the redesigned 2008 Liberty is again in the middle of Jeep's lineup, which now numbers seven models. The new Liberty continues as a 5-passenger model with two rows of seats. It is built on the same platform as the previous model, which it shares with the Dodge Nitro, but it has new styling inside and out. The Liberty's wheelbase grows by two inches for 2008, and overall length increases by 2.5 inches, but interior cargo room is down slightly. Rear- and 4-wheel drive (4WD) setups are available, and Jeep is offering Liberty with its Selec-Trac II full-time 4WD system for the first time.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Jeep Liberty is offered in two trim levels: Sport and Limited. Standard features on the Sport model include cloth upholstery; air conditioning; tilt steering wheel; 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat; power mirrors, locks and windows; remote keyless entry; AM/FM/CD stereo with auxiliary input jack; and P225/75R16 all-season tires on aluminum wheels. Liberty Sport options include a Sky Slider canvas sunroof; regular sunroof; towing package with trailer sway control; Premium Sound Group with 6-disc CD changer and Sirius satellite radio; all-terrain tires; and skid plates.

Liberty Limited models add Yes Essentials cloth upholstery that Jeep says is stain- and odor-resistant; heated mirrors; 368-watt Infinity sound system; cruise control; vehicle information center; auto-dimming rearview mirror; roof rails; 6-way power driver's seat; fold-flat front passenger seat; universal garage door opener; anti-theft alarm; fog lamps; and P236/65R17 all-season tires on aluminum wheels.

Available options on the Liberty include heated front seats; leather upholstery; remote starting; automatic climate control; rear obstacle detection; P235/60R18 all-season tires on chromed aluminum wheels; Jeep's UConnect wireless cell phone link; and Jeep's MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment system, which has a 20-gigabyte hard drive, a navigation system, and Sirius satellite radio with real-time traffic and a 1-year subscription.

Powertrain
Both 2008 Jeep Liberty models use a carryover 3.7-liter V-6 engine that produces 210 hp and 235 lb.-ft. of torque. Sport models come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. A 4-speed automatic is optional for Sport and standard on Limited. The engine and transmissions are covered by Jeep's lifetime powertrain warranty. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but two 4WD systems are offered. The base 4WD system is Jeep's Command Trac, a part-time system that should not be driven on dry pavement. Also offered is Select-Trac II, a full-time system that can be driven on dry pavement. Both systems have low-range gearing and are highly capable off-road. EPA fuel economy is estimated at 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway for all Libertys with a manual transmission or rear-wheel drive. With 4WD and the automatic transmission, the Liberty is rated at 15 mpg city/21 mpg highway. Jeep has given the 2008 Liberty a new independent front suspension and an independent 5-link rear suspension to improve on-road handling without compromising off-road capability, the automaker says.

Safety
Standard safety features include six air bags: dual front, front side, and side curtains that protect both seating rows and have rollover sensors. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) with brake assist, hill start assist, traction control, and electronic stability control with rollover mitigation are also standard. The brakes have rough-road detection; when rough conditions are detected, the system holds the brake pulses longer to better slow the vehicle. Hill Descent Control (HDC) is standard on 4x4 models. Trailer sway control and Jeep's ParkSense rear obstacle-detection system are optional.

Technology
Jeep's MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment system integrates the radio and navigation system with a 20-gigabyte hard drive. Jeep says the hard drive can hold 1600 songs. It can also hold pictures to use as screen savers, and it contains the navigation system's map information. Songs and pictures can be ripped from a CD or loaded from a jump drive via an integrated USB port. MyGIG also comes with Sirius satellite radio that has real-time traffic. Jeep's UConnect wireless cell phone link allows calls on Bluetooth-enabled cell phones to be played over the speakers. Jeep's Parksense rear obstacle-detection system detects objects near the vehicle when backing up and warns the driver with visible and audible cues. HDC uses the ABS system to apply the brakes and control the vehicle's speed down steep hills, while Hill Start Assist maintains brake pressure for a short time on a hill when the driver's foot is removed from the brake pedal. Remote engine starting is an option.
