Introduction
The 2015 Grand Cherokee is a 5-passenger, midsize SUV equipped with rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive (RWD or 4WD). Designed for serious off-roading--and straddling the mainstream and luxury SUV markets--the Grand Cherokee's competitors include the Audi Q5, BMW X5, several Land Rover models, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Lexus GX, and the Toyota 4Runner.

Jeep also sells a paved-road performance version called the Grand Cherokee SRT. It competes against similar models from Audi, BMW, Land Rover, and Mercedes-Benz.

Models and Features
Five versions of the 2015 Grand Cherokee are available: Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT.

The Laredo is the mainstream model, with a starting price just over $30,000. Upgrade to the Grand Cherokee Limited and the SUV is equipped with leather interior, 8-way power-adjustable front seats, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, universal garage door opener, and a power liftgate. The Limited's exterior is dressed up with chrome trim and this version rolls on unique 18-in. polished aluminum wheels. Rear park-assist sensors and a reversing camera are also standard, along with a 115-volt power outlet, charge-only USB ports, remote engine starting, and more.

The Grand Cherokee Overland is equipped with upgraded interior and exterior trim, bi-xenon HID headlights with automatic high-beam control, LED running lights, rain-sensing wipers, panoramic sunroof, power-folding side mirrors, and 20-in. aluminum wheels. Jeep's Uconnect 8.4 touch-screen infotainment system with navigation is standard for the Overland, along with ventilated front seats, ambient cabin lighting, leather-wrapped dashboard and door panels, power tilt-and-telescoping wood-and-leather steering wheel, auto-dimming side and rearview mirrors, and both a cargo net and cargo cover.

Grand Cherokee Summit models add premium leather, open-pore genuine wood cabin trim, berber-style floor mats, illuminated door sills, acoustic laminated glass, active noise-cancellation system, and a 19-speaker premium audio system. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, and forward-collision warning with crash-mitigation technology also come standard. A set of 20-in. polished aluminum wheels in a unique design identify Summit models, and this version includes front and rear park-assist sensors, adaptive headlights that help the driver to see around corners, and headlight washers.

The Grand Cherokee SRT is tuned for maximum performance on pavement, featuring unique styling, a more powerful engine, Selec-Track stability and traction control, and specific braking, suspension, and steering enhancements. Interior seating, upholstery, trim, and instrumentation are also unique to this trim level.

Under the Hood
Four different engines are available for the 2015 Grand Cherokee. A 290-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 motor is standard in all but the SRT version. Optional engines for the Limited, Overland, and Summit trim levels include a 360-horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8, and a 240-horsepower, 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 that Jeep refers to as its EcoDiesel engine.

Each of these three engines is matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and each has an Eco driving mode designed to maximize fuel economy. The V-8 also includes cylinder deactivation, allowing it to operate as a 4-cylinder engine under certain driving conditions to further conserve fuel.

The Grand Cherokee SRT features a 6.4-liter V-8 engine generating 475 horsepower. An 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters feeds the power to all four wheels but with a rear-wheel bias, and this version of the SUV is equipped with launch control and a Track driving mode. Jeep also upgrades the Grand Cherokee SRT's braking, steering, and suspension components to further enhance performance.

In addition to engine variety, the Grand Cherokee can be optioned with three different 4WD systems: fully automatic Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II with low-range capability and Selec-Terrain traction control, and Quadra-Drive with Selec-Terrain, an electronic limited-slip differential and the ability to direct all of the engine's torque to just one wheel in order to maximize traction. The Grand Cherokee's Selec-Speed Control provides hill-ascent and hill-descent control.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, 2015 Grand Cherokees equipped with a V-6 engine get a minimum of 17 mpg in the city and a maximum of 25 mpg on the highway, while those with the V-8 engine are rated to return a minimum of 14 mpg city and a maximum of 22 mpg highway. The fuel-economy champion is the EcoDiesel engine, ranging from 21 mpg in the city to 30 mpg on the highway. Performance-tuned SRT models are EPA-rated to get 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway.

Safety and Technology
The Grand Cherokee's optional Quadra-Lift air suspension raises the SUV up to an additional 2.1 in. to improve ground clearance and the vehicle's approach, breakover, and departure angles for improved off-road capability. The suspension's Aero mode also lowers the Grand Cherokee 1 in. at speeds over 55 mph in order to make it more aerodynamic--and fuel-efficient--on the highway.

The 2015 Grand Cherokee is equipped with a 7-in. multi-view configurable instrument display and a system that reads incoming text messages. Jeep's Uconnect 8.4 touch-screen infotainment system is included for Overland, Summit, and SRT versions, paving the way to voice-activated text messaging, a navigation system, Uconnect Access with Emergency Call/9-1-1 Call service, and mobile Wi-Fi hotspot capability. Additionally, all but the Laredo can be optioned with a rear-seat entertainment system with dual viewing screens and a Blu-Ray DVD player, and the Summit and SRT trim levels feature a premium 19-speaker audio system.

Safety-related equipment highlights include adaptive bi-xenon HID headlights, automatic high-beam headlights, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear park-assist sensors, and an adaptive cruise control system with stop-and-go capability. The 2015 Grand Cherokee can also be fitted with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, and a forward-collision warning system with crash-mitigation technology.
