Introduction
The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsize SUV designed for serious off-road capability. A performance-oriented Grand Cherokee SRT is built for paved-road speed and handling. Grand Cherokee competitors range from family-friendly crossover SUVs such as the Ford Edge to luxurious off-roaders such as the Lexus GX and muscular performance models like the Porsche Cayenne.

Models and Features

Upgrading from standard Laredo trim to the Limited model adds 18-inch polished wheels, heated front and rear leather seats, driver memory settings, heated steering wheel, reversing camera, rear park-assist sensors, remote engine starting, universal garage door opener, 115-volt power outlet, and more. Selec-Terrain is included for the Limited 4WD.

The Grand Cherokee Overland adds 20-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlights with automatic high beams, LED running lights, rain-sensing wipers, power tailgate, premium leather, premium wood trim, ventilated front seats, and a power steering wheel. An 8.4-inch touch-screen infotainment system with Uconnect Access telematics, navigation, and premium sound is also standard, and the Overland 4WD has a Quadra-Lift air suspension.

The Grand Cherokee Summit is equipped with a mesh grille, headlight washers, polished wheels, 19-speaker audio system, and more. A Quadra-Drive II 4WD system is standard with diesel and V-8 engines, and the Summit is equipped with front park-assist sensors, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with crash mitigation, blind-spot monitoring system, and rear cross-path detection.

The Grand Cherokee SRT gets its own styling upgrades inside and out, including functional air vents punched into the hood, red-painted brake calipers, a flat-bottom SRT steering wheel, carbon fiber cabin trim, and SRT Performance Packages technology that tracks driver performance over time. Few options are offered for the Grand Cherokee SRT.

Options and Packages
Each version of the 2014 Grand Cherokee can be upgraded with elements from the next highest trim level, either through packages that group upgrades together or by selecting options individually. Laredo buyers can outfit a Grand Cherokee for serious off-roading and towing, but many of the Grand Cherokee's luxury and technology features are reserved for the Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT models.

Under the Hood
A 3.6-liter V-6 engine is standard for all Grand Cherokees, except the SRT. It delivers 290 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm, and can tow up to 6,200 pounds. A 5.7-liter V-8 engine is optional, and is equipped with Fuel Saver cylinder-deactivation technology. It generates 360 horsepower at 5,150 rpm and 390 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm, and tows up to 7,400 pounds.

New for 2014, a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine is optional for Limited, Overland, and Summit trim levels. The new diesel engine generates 240 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 420 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,000 rpm. Maximum towing capacity is 7,400 pounds.

SRT models have a 6.4-liter V-8 with Fuel Saver technology, producing 470 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 465 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,300 rpm. Towing capacity increases this year from 5,000 to 7,200 pounds.

All 2014 Grand Cherokees have a new 8-speed automatic transmission. All except the SRT are equipped with standard rear-wheel drive (2WD), with a choice between three optional 4-wheel-drive (4WD) systems.

Quadra-Trac I includes a single-speed transfer case with a full-time, 50/50 power split to the front and rear wheels. Quadra-Trac II provides a 2-speed transfer case and can automatically route all engine power to the axle with the greatest traction. Quadra-Drive II is equipped with an electronic limited-slip differential and distributes power to the individual wheels with the best traction.

Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II include Selec-Terrain technology with Sand, Mud, Auto, Snow, and Rock driving modes. For 2014, the Sport mode is engaged using the transmission selector. New Selec-Speed technology includes hill-ascent and hill-descent control systems that allows the Grand Cherokee's driver to traverse steep terrain using only the standard paddle shifters to regulate speed. A Selec-Track system for the SRT delivers greater power to the Jeep's rear wheels.

The optional Quadra-Lift air suspension offers 5 height adjustments providing up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance, as well as "Park" and "Aero" modes. Remove the Grand Cherokee's front air dam, and this SUV offers a 35.8-degree approach angle, 29.6-degree departure angle, and a 23.5-degree break-over angle.

Fuel Economy
As rated by the EPA, the 2014 Grand Cherokee is expected to return between 14 mpg in the city with the 5.7-liter V-8 and 4WD to a high of 25 mpg on the highway with the 3.6-liter V-6 engine and 2WD. Jeep estimates that the EcoDiesel engine will return between 21 mpg in the city with 4WD and 30 mpg on the highway with 2WD. The SRT model is rated 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) calls the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee a "Top Safety Pick." The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Grand Cherokee a 5-star (out of 5 stars) side-impact rating, 4-star rollover rating with 4WD, and a 3-star rollover rating with 2WD. As this overview is written, the NHTSA has not performed frontal-impact crash tests on the 2014 Grand Cherokee.

Uconnect Access service is optional for the Grand Cherokee, and includes a 9-1-1 button on the rearview mirror for use in case of an emergency. Also new for 2014 are forward-collision warning with crash mitigation, an 8.4-inch touch-screen infotainment system, and a configurable 7-inch gauge display.
