The 2015 Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV that offers various options, many of which, taken together, add up to greater off-roading capability than most of its competitors. It offers a choice of two engines, and front-wheel drive (FWD) or two types of 4-wheel drive (4WD). The Jeep Compass shares a platform and drivetrain with the Jeep Patriot, and competes against small crossovers such as the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Nissan Juke, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Subaru XV Crosstrek, Toyota RAV4, and Volkswagen Tiguan.Models and Features
The 2015 Jeep Compass is available in Sport, Altitude, Latitude, High Altitude, and Limited trim levels. Standard equipment for the Compass Sport includes 16-in. wheels (17-in. wheels with the optional larger engine), air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, floor mats, illuminated cupholders, outside temperature indicator, dark-tinted rear privacy glass, fog lights, and aluminum wheels. The Altitude adds 18-in. black glossy wheels, black exterior trim, sportier upholstery, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls.
The Compass Latitude adds an automatic transmission, power windows and locks, power heated exterior mirrors, remote keyless entry, sport mesh fabric with vinyl seat inserts, driver's seat-height adjuster, fold-down front passenger seat, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a 115-volt power inverter. The High Altitude features 17-in. wheels and adds leather upholstery, 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and a sunroof.
The top-of-the-line Jeep Compass Limited features the more powerful engine, upgraded headlights, brakes, and exterior trim, and 18-in. aluminum wheels. The Limited interior includes automatic climate control, leather upholstery, 6-way power driver's seat, vehicle information center, auto-dimming rearview mirror, universal garage door opener, and an upgraded stereo with a hard-disc drive and satellite radio.Options and Packages
Depending on the trim level selected, available upgrades to the 2015 Compass include remote engine start, a power sunroof, reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity, improved audio systems with iPod connection, premium sound system with tailgate speakers that deploy for outdoor parties, and a navigation system. A trailer-towing package adds 2,000 lbs. of towing capacity. An Off-Road package adds what Jeep calls "Trail Rated" capability to the Compass.Under the Hood
The standard engine for the 2015 Compass is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder unit that generates 158 horsepower and 141 lb.-ft. of torque. Optional for the lower trim levels and standard for the Compass Limited is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 172 horsepower and 165 lb.-ft. of torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard for the Compass Sport, while the Latitude and Limited get a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard for all 2015 Compasses, but two 4WD options are offered. Freedom Drive I provides full-time 4WD and a lock mode for improved traction when necessary. Freedom Drive II is a 4WD system that includes an Off-Road package: all-terrain tires, raised ride height, fuel tank skid plate, tow hooks, and a full-size spare tire. The Off-Road package also includes hill-start assist, hill-descent control, Brake Lock Differential, and a continuously variable transmission.Fuel Economy
Fuel economy for the 2015 Jeep Compass ranges from 23 mpg city to 30 mpg highway with the 2.0-liter engine and manual transmission. Adding the automatic transmission results in a slight mileage penalty (21/28/24 mpg city/highway/combined). With the 2.4-liter engine and manual transmission and FWD, fuel economy is 23/29/25 mpg (21/28/23 mpg with the automatic). With 4WD and manual transmission, fuel economy is 21/27/23 mpg, and 20/23/21 mpg with the automatic.Safety Ratings and Technology
With the exception of the Limited trim level, all 2015 Compass SUVs with FWD employ rear drum brakes; all other versions have front and rear disc brakes.
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2015 Jeep Compass received 3 out of a possible 5 stars for frontal crash protection, and 4 stars for rollover protection.
