Introduction
The 2014 Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV that can be optioned to provide greater off-roading capability than most of its competitors. Sharing a platform and drivetrain with the Jeep Patriot, the Jeep Compass competes against a broad range of small crossovers. Key competitors include the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Nissan Juke, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Subaru XV Crosstrek, Toyota RAV4, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Models and Features
The 2014 Jeep Compass is sold in Sport, Latitude, and Limited trim levels. Standard equipment for the Compass Sport includes air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, and floor mats. The Sport's interior is also equipped with illuminated cupholders, a removable and rechargeable flashlight, and an outside temperature indicator, while the exterior gets dark-tinted rear privacy glass, fog lights, and aluminum wheels.

The Compass Latitude model adds an automatic transmission, power windows, power door locks, power heated exterior mirrors, remote keyless entry, sport mesh fabric with vinyl seat inserts, a driver's seat height adjuster, front passenger's seat that folds in half to carry longer items, and heated front seats. This version also includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a 115-volt power inverter.

Choose the Compass Limited and this Jeep is equipped with a more powerful engine, improved headlights, better brakes, nicer exterior trim, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. Inside, the Limited model gains automatic climate control, leather upholstery, 6-way power driver's seat, vehicle information center, auto-dimming rearview mirror, universal garage door opener, and an upgraded stereo with a hard-disc drive and satellite radio.

Options and Packages
Depending on the trim level selected, the 2014 Compass can be upgraded with a power sunroof, reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity, improved audio systems with an iPod connection, premium sound system with tailgate speakers that deploy for outdoor parties, and a navigation system. Additionally, Compass buyers can add remote engine starting, install a trailer-towing package to give the crossover 2,000 pounds of towing capacity, and can choose between two different 4-wheel-drive (4WD) systems. An Off-Road package adds what Jeep calls "Trail Rated" capability to the Compass.

Under the Hood
A 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for the Compass Sport and Compass Latitude, generating 158 horsepower and 141 lb.-ft. of torque. Optional for the Sport and Latitude and standard for the Compass Limited, a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine generates 172 horsepower and 165 lb.-ft. of torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard for Sport models, while the Latitude and Limited get a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard for all Compass models. A Freedom Drive I 4WD system is optional, providing full-time operation and a lock mode for improved traction when necessary.

A Freedom Drive II 4WD system is also available, included in an Off-Road package that gives the Compass "Trail Rated" capability. All-terrain tires, a raised ride height, fuel tank skid plate, tow hooks, and a full-size spare tire are also included with this package. The Off-Road package also contains hill-start assist, hill-descent control, Brake Lock Differential, and a continuously variable transmission designed specifically for this application.

Fuel Economy
As rated by the EPA, fuel-economy ratings for the 2014 Jeep Compass range between 20 mpg in the city with the 2.4-liter engine and the Off-Road package to 30 mpg on the highway with the 2.0-liter engine, FWD, and the manual transmission.
