Overview

Chrysler Group first introduced this 5-passenger compact crossover SUV in the 2007 model year. It's similar to the Jeep Patriot, but has a sporty look and is built to handle rougher terrain. For 2011, the Compass has been restyled, its off-road capabilities enhanced, and new option packages added. Ride height is also slightly increased.

The entry-level trim of the 2011 Jeep Compass features 17-inch alloy wheels, 4-speaker stereo, air conditioning, fog lights, some power accessories, and roof rails. The Latitude package of options upgrades the seats and steering wheel, and adds an auxiliary power point. The Compass Limited adds those options, plus 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, trip computer, automatic climate control, more power accessories, and an upgraded sound system. Several option packages are available, including Security and Cargo (cargo cover, front side air bags, security alarm, Bluetooth, and more); Sun and Sound (sunroof and upgraded sound system); Media Center (navigation system); and Freedom-Drive II (all-terrain tires and various other performance enhancements). With all seats up, the Compass provides 22.7 cubic feet of cargo space in the back, according to Jeep. With rear seatbacks and front passenger seat all folded flat, total cargo space comes to 53.6 cubic feet.

The 2011 Jeep Compass' standard power plant is a 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that works with a 5-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. A continuously variable transmission and 4-wheel drive are optional. The EPA estimates that that engine, with manual transmission, will deliver 22 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway. On the base trim, an optional 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is available. It delivers 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway with manual transmission, according to the EPA.

The 2011 Jeep Compass features front disc/rear drum brakes on the base model, and 4-wheel disc brakes on upper trims. Full-length side curtain air bags are standard; front side air bags are optional. Stability control is also standard.

Depending on trims and options, the MSRP for the 2011 Jeep Compass ranged from $19,295 to $25,995.
