What's New for 2014:

  • All-new Fiat-based crossover
  • FWD or 4WD
  • Standard 9-speed automatic transmission
  • Choice of four trim levels
  • EPA-estimated to average up to 31 mpg on the highway
  • 5-passenger seating capacity

After a long hiatus, the Cherokee returns to the Jeep lineup in the form of a contemporarily styled 5-passenger crossover. Front-wheel-drive (FWD) models are available, but in keeping with the brand's off-roading heritage, a selection of 4-wheel-drive (4WD) systems are also part of the mix. Competitors for the all-new 2014 Cherokee include the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, and the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport.

Models and Features
Jeep offers the 2014 Cherokee in five distinct trim levels, most of which are available with either FWD or 4WD. Starting off is the Sport, equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and streaming audio, cruise control, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and the company's 5-inch touch-screen infotainment system. The Sport rides on rather basic 17-inch steel wheels.

Positioned one step above the Sport is the Cherokee Latitude, home of standard fog lights, 115-volt household-type outlet, LED interior lighting, hidden passenger-seat storage, leather accents, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The 2014 Cherokee takes on a more upscale character when decked out in Limited trim. Credit for that goes to amenities such as heated turn signal mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, 7-inch gauge display, leather upholstery, and a rearview camera. The list of upgrades goes on to include heated power front seats, heated steering wheel, 18-inch alloy wheels, and an 8.4-inch touch screen for the infotainment system.

Rounding out the lineup is the Trailhawk, the only Cherokee fitted with standard 4WD. In addition, this model features red accent stitching in the cabin, all-season floor mats, skid plates, and unique 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires.

Options and Packages
A number of options are offered for the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, among them are a Class III tow package, upgraded infotainment systems for the various trim levels, and a Leather Interior package that fits the Trailhawk with premium upholstery, heat for the front seats and steering wheel, and a power driver's seat with 8-way adjustment. Some of those components are found within the Cold Weather package, which also boasts a remote start system that's ideal for early morning starts.

Those amenities upgrade the Cherokee with creature comforts, but the Technology package is clearly aimed in the direction of safety, as evidenced by its lane-departure and forward-collision warning systems, rear cross-traffic alert, intelligent cruise control, front and rear park-assist sensors, and blind-spot monitoring system.

Under the Hood
Power for the 2014 Jeep Cherokee comes from one of two powertrains. The first is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 184 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque, and is mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The second offering is a 3.2-liter V-6 that produces 271 horsepower and 239 lb.-ft. of torque, all of which is managed by the same 9-speed gearbox.

Buyers have the choice of FWD, 4WD with a single-speed transfer case, or a 4WD system with a dedicated low-range setting. Specific to Trailhawk models is a 4WD system with a locking rear axle.

Safety and Ratings
In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Jeep Cherokee received a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--for moderate frontal-offset crash protection; the Cherokee also received a "Top Safety Pick" designation from the Institute. As this overview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee.

Among the Cherokee's many safety features are 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, and a trailer-sway damping system.
